Canon 300 f4 IS plus Canons 2XTC ???

OK, a Canon 500mm or 600mm prime is not going to happen here so I'm thinking about the above combo to give me more reach.

At the minute I use the 300mm with Canons 1.4xTC and have no complaints. It's very difficult to see the difference TC on or off.

I realise I will loose two stops of light making the 300 f4 a 600 f8 but ( in good light ) I should still retain AF on the 1DMKII.

I know it won't come close to the 600mm prime and the 2xTC will create soft images but my question is "will it be better than cropping and resizing the 300mm plus the 1.4xTC " ?

Any thoughts ?

Well I have no experiance of either but as you say the difference between the 1.4x convertor on/off makes very little difference. Unfortunately the 2x convertor doesn't fair quite as well and most people admit that there is slight loss of quality, now the question is how much is a slight amount?

I would be very tempted to buy a 2x convertor online and give it a try, do some well set up test shots and then compare those to the 1.4x, 2x and finally a image sized up. Your results should tell you if its worth buying the convertor or just sending it back.
