Canon 500D lost its built in flash

Yesterday I put my 500D with its external flash onto a counter top and it over-balanced and fell to the floor. It is fine - no external damage at all. The flash gun broke off so I have to fix the foot of that. However, the camera seems to have lost all knowledge of the built in flash. The flash menu has disappeared from the menu and the flash button on the left hand side of the body does nothing.

I can't find a software reset in the menus.

Anyone have any ideas how I might proceed?

Re: Canon 500D lost its built in flash

Is there a little peice of the external flash still stuch in the hotshoe mount. There's a tiny switch on one side that tells the camera an external flash is fitted.
If a little bit of plastic is still stuck in the switch it will think there's an external flash fitted.

Thats also the reason you cant but a little hotshoe cover, it swithces the camera to external flash

If the switch is bust then it's off to the repair shop

Can't see anything stuck. Mind you I can't see a 'tiny' switch either.

Thanks for the idea.
David

PS I think I can live with it if I can fix my external flash as I mostly use the flash for taking photos of scale models that I build so the on board flash is no good for that.

Re: Canon 500D lost its built in flash

Sorted - thank you so much.

I phoned Canon to see if it was a reset or something. He just tried me going to the P setting and the Flash menu came back, His suggestion then was to send it to a repair agent.

Rather than that, I had another look at the menu. I went into it and tried the internal flash settings and was told that there was still an external flash fitted. Thus, following your suggestion I did a further check and on very close inspection it did seem that there was something nestling under the left hand hot shoe guide. I got my trusty modelling scalpel and ran it along the gap. Bingo. The flash is working again.

Thank you very much for your help.

Nice to be of service Sahh.

Well at least you can breath a sigh of relief that you don't have to send it to Canon for repair it would be christmas before you got it back the way they've just treated me ....

Re: Canon 500D lost its built in flash

I live just outside Ipswich and they gave me a phone number in Colchester which looks like an agent rather than them. Still I hope never to find out.

Once again, thanks.

I think Chris deserves an electronic pat on the back with our reputation system - not the iTrader, the rep system - second icon in above the 'reply' button on his post.

Re: Canon 500D lost its built in flash

I have used the Colchester centre before, was told to by Canon. Had my repair all done and back in my hand in 8 days including postage both ways. Can't fault them myself.

Cheers,
Rob
