Canon 50mm f1.8
Could I have some advice on this lens please. I'm thinking of possibly getting this for some wedding shots I've got coming up. The idea is to use it for portrait/closeups and mainly for night shots, with the f1.8 I thought this would be of benefit. I spoke to a guy in Jessops yesterday whos opinion I respect 'cause he put me onto my 70-300, he said just stick with my kit lens? What are your thoughts peeps.

You won't have any regrets if you buy the 50mm 1.8 - I have the mkII and for the money it is an outstanding lens.
I have no experience of wedding photography though so I will leave the feedback on that aspect to someone with more knowledge and experience than I. |

For potraits this lens is a beauty, it is also very good for many other things as well but you will have to be disciplined with your framing of shots. If you are used to zoom lenses you can become lazy and when you start using primes you will find that you have to work a lot harder to frame your shots properly. It can teach you so much though and the rewards can be stuning.
All of my recent flower shots were photographed with that lens as was my "still lake" shot. Do a search for those to see the quality. If you want portraits I also shot these with that lense. HTH

Speechless, you've sold it to me. All I need to do is get this lens and stick you on the back of it, hey presto brilliant pictures
Seriously I think it would benefit me to get this, as you said it will teach me to frame things better, and not to be to reliant on the old zooms. With not having an apprenticeship in photography through film stages etc...then learning these things can only help me improve my pictures. PS the baby pictures are stunning, this has also given me ideas for my brother-in-laws baby who's due to land the end of july. Cheers. |

Just goes to show what the guys in Jessops know
![]() Had mine for quite a while now, there's nothing to touch it for the price. |

Another happy customer here.
I can't believe the quality for the price. It matches lenses 3 to 4 times the price. It's a bit plasticy...so what? I don't make a habit of throwing my lenses on the floor and at that price even I could afford to go and by another one. It's great in low light and you can get some really creative DOF. The kit lens is a non starter in comparison. |
