Canon 5d mk2 or Canon 7d?

Im thinking of upgrading my exsiting Canon but so undecided on which camera to get. Im not to worried on going full frame or keeping the 1.6x crop. i've worked out the exact lenses i would buy for which ever camera i go for. The price i will pay are pretty much the same for both. Im NOT interested in the HD video recording side of things. So which do i go for? when the 5d mk2 was released i wanted it but since the 7d has been launch im torn... any help would be fantastic! Neil

Re: Canon 5d mk2 or Canon 7d?

5d2 if you can afford it, I got mine a few months ago.

The extra detail in full frame and the image quality are astounding.

However there are a few other factors to consider and to decide you'd need to handle each camera.

I went the 5d2 route after handling both the 7d and 5d2, for me the feel and build of the 5d2 was superior. It felt more cofortable and although a little heavier just seemed better put together.

Go and have a look in both in your local camera shop.

I would say that if your starting from scratch try a few other makes as well.

I believe Nikon might make some half decent camera's as well

Re: Canon 5d mk2 or Canon 7d?

If money isn't the main issue then go for a 5d2 your on the higher rung of the ladder from day 1.

My lineup has been 350D, 10D, then 40D and now 5d2 all have been great in their own right but the 5d2 is a beutiful camera to use, and the results are just what I've been looking for.

My Mojo has risen like it's never risen since the days of my Olympus OM10 my first real camera.

However as you may have guessed I'm highly biased.

What you would find though if you searched round Pixalo is that a number of members have recently gone the 5d2 route and not one seems to have any complaints.

The 7D seems to be a strange half way house, I thing designed to give more performance and an upgrade ruite to those with APS-c smaller sensors. It gives those that buy it most of what the 5d2 gives without the expense of replacing loads of glass.

I was lucky enough to be able to sell my 10-22 EFS and some other unused kit and replace the one EF-S lens with the 17-40 L lens.

As you don't seem to be in that situation and have funds I'd go 5d2 and possibly buy it if you can with the 24-105L that comes as a kit.

Re: Canon 5d mk2 or Canon 7d?

It may depend on your type of photography. I am a jack of all trades but take photographs for competitions so I need to produce high quality prints and need to crop for artistic reasons. I also take a lot of HDR and few low light shots so the 5D2 is ideal for me with its high resolution and low noise. The frame rate is not that fast on the 5D2 though not an issue for me.

If you are primarily a sports photograher or wildlife photographer, the faster frame rate and 1.6X crop factor may be of significance for you so then the 7D might be a good option.

Re: Canon 5d mk2 or Canon 7d?

The real question is why do you want to upgrade ?

Is it for more controls / more pixels / or something else ?

Would you be better off investing in lenses ?

What sort of photography are you intending to do with your new camera?
What are you shooting with at the moment?
What lenses do you currently have?
