Re: Canon 70-200 f4L IS USM - Help!
I can only compare with my own lenses. I regularly use my riends 70-200mm f2.8 IS L series and his is very quiet. I have the 70-200mm f4 version and that too is quiet.
I also have the 100-400mm IS and despite being slightly louder when first kicking in, it is still not anything like what I would call noisy. In addition I have the 300mm f4 IS L prime lens and again the IS is not noticeably noisy. I am not saying they are silent like USM, that is impossible as they have gyros in them but if you are noticing a noise of anything above your 100-400mm lens, I would definitely get it checked out. Cheers, Rob

Re: Canon 70-200 f4L IS USM - Help!
Just thought I'd post an update. The lens has now been with Canon for a week, so I've just phoned to see what is happening. Apparently it needs a new lens assembly, which is due to arrive on Monday, so fingers crossed! It should be back with me for my trip to Manchester.
At least I now know that it wasn't just me taking duff photo's which I was beginning to think. |

Re: Canon 70-200 f4L IS USM - Help!
So if it comes back in time for your trip it means that it's good news all round
![]() Even if not, like you say they have found a fault and your mind is now at rest as to where the problem lay. The lens should give absolutely great results once it is returned, it will make all the inconvenience worth while

Re: Canon 70-200 f4L IS USM - Help!
Thanks Steve. Hopefully the results should be good from what I've heard about good examples of the lens, so now I'm looking forward to the velodrome. I've emailed a pro cycling tog who's work I really admire & have asked him for advice on the velodrome & got some idea of the light & what I need so should be a good 3 days.

Re: Canon 70-200 f4L IS USM - Help!
Well, the lens is back & tested at Sunday's rugby match. Unfortunately, I'm still without my home computer, so I can't load any shots on, but they look fine on my epson viewer, it's only a 4" screen, but zooming in looks ok. Hopefully I will have the computer back this week & will post a final shot.
Thanks for all the advice & support. Sarah |

Ok here is the first shot from the newly fixed lens. In the end, the focus was re-calibrated and the IS system replaced. Much Better.

Re: Canon 70-200 f4L IS USM - Help!
Thanks Steve, it certainly has been worth it, turnaround from Canon at Boreham wood was just over a week, which would have been even quicker, but they had to order in the IS.
I'm now ready for Manchester Velodrome on the 23rd! |
