Canon 70-200mm f/4 USM

I took the plunge and ordered a Canon 70-200mm f/4 usm which I've just taken delivery of and now I'm a bit concerned about the weight of the lens on the front of the 40D on a tripod/monopod.

I'm thinking of buying a bracket but the Canon one is so expensive. Has anyone any alternatives to suggest?

Does it not come with a bracket? If not I would suggest you buy one. If you mount the camera on the tripod the weight of the lens will pull it down to the front.

Re: Canon 70-200mm f/4 USM

The 40D has a magnesium alloy body so I doubt very much it will damage the camera.

I have the 100-400 L IS USM and I have to admit that came with a lens ring to tripod mount it.

If you can buy a ring try ebay you might find one on there.

One thing mounting the lens to the tripod would do is give better balance

Yep - you should use a lens mount - not the camera mount. Surprised the Canon lens has not got one as standard

SRB do lens mounts.

I know the Canon mount is expensive but I myself would buy that than trust a cheap alternative.

The f4 version is fairly light and I don't think you should have too much trouble weight wise, I never had problems with mine. the f2.8 is a different matter and comes with a tripod mount.

Re: Canon 70-200mm f/4 USM

The f4 doesn't weigh anything so I'd not be that worried, unless you have a cheap tripod.

A tripod mount is however very useful, especially for quickly rotating between landscape and portrait orientation. Canon are rather cheeky with their pricing for the additional mount

I don't know how much the Canon mount is, but the SRB one is £59.

Mike

Canon are outrageous with the pricing on all their extras, have you seen the cost of their lens hoods.

A plastic moulding with a fury inner finish at over £25. To me thats extortion

Quite agree and I was about to say that all L glass comes with hoods, but that's not true

I believe some of the CF hoods for the big white primes are over £300!!

Re: Canon 70-200mm f/4 USM

Dunno about all L glass but both mine came with hoods.

I have to admit the one that came with the 100-400 L IS USM is about the size of a family tin of beans, and I'm not sure it isn't a recycled dustbin it's that big

If I decide to get one for my nifty fifty it will be an ebay model
