Canon 70-300 is

I have just been testing my Canon 70 - 300 is lens, that was sent to be repaired under the canon "special warranty", ( I think they mean re-call ), and returned yesterday, it is now as sharp in portrait orientation as in landscape orientation .
Anyone with this lens, within the serial No. recall range, contact canon and send it to be repaired asap.
This was a bit of a test as far as I as was concerned, as this is the second major issue with my canon gear, ( the other being the mirror problem on the 300d), if I was not happy with the repair or the service, I was ready to ebay my canon equipment and change brands, but it looks like I will be staying with canon.

Nice to see a good result now and again Co-incidentally I've just returned from shooting soccer with my 70-300, I've never noticed the portrait focus issue with mine but, out of interest, where do you check the affected serial numbers?

Re: Canon 70-300 is

info about the problem can be found here:- Support - Telephoto Zoom Lens - EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - Service Notices - Canon USA Consumer Products

The problem on mine was very noticeable when the image was viewed at 100%, I noticed it as soon as I started using the lens, but blamed it on a cheap polarizing filter .

The way I checked was, using a tripod, photograph a magazine about ten yards away at the 300mm setting, on the manual setting, with IS turned off, in lanscape and portrait mode. View both images at 100% to compare.
One thing I have noticed after the repair, is that there is no "zoom creep", the lens feels "tighter".

Re: Canon 70-300 is

Thanks for that info. I knew that Canon USA were dealing with the problem but does this mean that Canon UK have accepted there is a problem....and if so which Canon Service Centre did you send it to?

Re: Canon 70-300 is

Yes, Canon Uk now accept that there is a problem.
I phoned the No. on their website, (08705 143 723) they then sent a email with a list of service centres I could send it to, for repair.
Turnaround was about two weeks, from Colchester Camera Repairs.
