Re: Canon 7d firmware update ?

Sometimes there can be issues with firmware, but not often. Most people will wait for a while to see if any problems come to light before updating. I don't have a Canon, but the firmware for a Nikon has to be downloaded onto your computer, then transferred onto a memory card. You then use the menu system to install the new firmware.

Most makes give you a 'how to' on their download pages, but i've just had a look on the 7D MAC download page

EOS 7D

and there does not seem to be any instructions. it does however recommend that you download the latest camera manual as some functions will be changed.

Always best to see what firmware you have in the camera before you start, and if you have to install earlier updates in order. Most times you don't have to do this though.

Re: Canon 7d firmware update ?

Not viewed this as my flash player has crashed

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct...43287494,d.d2k

Also found this on the net

Click to download the version you need based on your OS. The firmware upgrade procedure is the same as previous upgrades for EOS cameras:

1. Download the zipped firmware file to your hard drive

2. Copy the downloaded .FIR file to a CF memory card by inserting the card into a card reader and dragging/dropping the file to the card

3. Install the CF card into your camera and call up Firmware Ver. x.x.x. in the EOS 7D's 3rd set-up menu (with the yellow wrench)

4. Select OK when asked if you want to upgrade to the new version

Note that full PDF instructions for the upgrade procedure will accompany the firmware upgrade when you download the zipped file from the site. Be sure to read and thoroughly understand the steps before attempting to install it into your camera.

The last paragraph says that instructions come with the download.

Re: Canon 7d firmware update ?

GRAHAM, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR DETAILED INFORMATION. I AM STILL IN TWO MINDS AS TO DO IT OR NOT, AS I AM WORRIED, KNOWING MY LUCK, SOMETHING WILL GO WRONG.

BUT AT LEAST NOW, I KNOW HOW TO DO IT, IF I AM EVER BRAVE ENOUGH TO DO IT.

THANKS AGAIN

Re: Canon 7d firmware update ?

FIONA, THANK YOU, I THINK YOU GOT YOUR 7D THE SAME TIME AS I DID. IT'S GOOD TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE, SUCH AS YOURSELF, WHO USES THEIR CAMERA A LOT MORE THAN I DO.

AS YOU SAY IF IT AINT BROKE DON'T FIX IT. I HAVE BEEN REALLY WORRIED ABOUT THIS, AS I THOUGHT IT HAD TO BE UPDATED, BUT I WAS WORRIED THAT SOMETHING WOULD GO WRONG AFTER UPDATING IT.

THANKS FOR PUTTING MY MIND AT REST FIONA

Re: Canon 7d firmware update ?

There's no need to update the firmware - I didn't bother with the first as I didn't use the area that was fixed. But I did update the last (so, effectively, I've done the first as well as that's included!) as I wanted to take advantage of setting the Auto ISO to a maximum figure. As a result, I've used Auto ISO a fair bit, restricting it to ISO800 or 1600, dependant on circumstance.

As suggested, it is a straightforward process and, although there is a very minimal risk (if power is lost midway through the couple of minutes it takes - so ALWAYS use a freshly charged battery) I've never heard of anyone's messing up

Re: Canon 7d firmware update ?

Updating the firmware is easy to do, as Graham explained, and can give you a range of new goodies to play with. I like the extras in V2 but if you won't use them then no need to upgrade. However I always upgrade firmware as it irons out glitches and fixes any bugs in the firmware. Also, if you haven't got the upgrade then you definitely can't use the new features.

The following, curtesy Northlight Images, tells you what you'll be missing

  • Firmware v2 now offers greater control of image settings and functionality, including a higher maximum RAW burst rate, now up to 25 RAW files or 130 JPEGs. Giving photographers greater control over images directly after capture, a new range of in-camera editing functions includes processing of RAW files, as well as the ability to easily adjust white balance, sharpness and Picture Style. Enhanced control over Auto ISO levels during both still and movie shooting now allows users to limit ISO speeds to within the native ISO 400-6,400 range, perfect for manipulating exposure in different situations.
  • During movie shooting, amateur videographers will also benefit from new manual control of audio levels, with the ability to choose from 64 different sound levels. New compatibility with Canon’s high-performance GPS unit, the GP-E2, enables photographers to track the locations of their images using longitude, latitude and altitude geo-tagging.
  • Firmware v2 is available to download now from: Canon Download Centre - Drivers, Software and Manual Downloads - Canon Europe
Canon EOS 7D firmware v2 – new features:

  • Improved maximum burst for RAW images (up to 25)
  • In-camera RAW image editing
  • In-camera Image Rating
  • In-camera JPEG resizing
  • Maximum Auto ISO setting (ISO 400-6400)
  • Manual audio level adjustment in movie recording
  • GPS compatibility
  • File name customisation
  • Time zone settings
  • Faster scrolling of magnified images
  • Quick control screen during playback

Re: Canon 7d firmware update ?

There are two ways to update, you can download the update files and install via a CF card but I think the best method is to use the Canon EOS Utility by connecting your camera to you computer via a USB connection. If you use the EOS utility, it will show you your current firmware version number and you can ask it to update the firmware but do follow instructions from the Canon website.

For my 20D, I have never updated the firmware because the changes were not of any significance to me so why risk it. For my EOS 5D Mkii and have updated it using the EOS utility at least twice. This is because the first few updates corrected problems and/or added new features which I might wish to use. More recent updates were not of interest though.

My advice would be to first establish what version you have and thus what advantages that you would gain by updating. I think that the risks are very low if you follow the Canon guidance and I found that it was clear and detailed.

Re: Canon 7d firmware update ?

I've also read this thread with interest, since I've never done a firmware update either. Like you Woody, I didn't know how. Might give it a shot (sic) now, or at least look into whether the available updates are worth doing, so thanks Woody for posting the question, and thanks everyone for helpful info
