Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM sample shots

I know this lens isn't as fast as Canons long primes but the flexibility of 100-400 suits me. Anyone wanting a lens like this obviously wants the long end eg. 400 so here are three samples. None of the shots have been cropped or sharpened and all taken with AWB.

1. 250mm - 1/800 at f5.6, 100ISO

2. 390mm - 1/500 at f5.6, 100ISO

3. 400mm - 1/500 at f6.3, 100ISO

All shot shortly after trying the lens for the very first time - they take themselves! All on Canon 350D. If anyone wants more shoot info I'll dig it out

Bit of noise in this - my/camera's fault and not lens as I had just changed to ISO100 from ISO400 (which is where it should've been!

But it's not the glass, it's the person pressing the button.

Sorry but I don't agree. Of course it is true that the picture as a whole is captured by the person, with composition etc all down to them, but the sharpness of an image is most certainly affected by the quality of the glass. To suggest that a good photographer will produce the same sharp image if he uses a relatively cheap 70-300mm USM lens as he would using an L series lens costing around 5 times the price is being somewhat disingenuous.

Give credit where it's due is always my belief... and sometimes that means crediting the equipment as well as the person using it. Wouldn't be much point in this entire folder of sample photos if the lens had nothing to do with it!

Cheers,
Rob

Whilst I'd totally agree to giving credit where credit was due, there is no doubt that there are some who rely on 'good' gear to give them good shots with nothing given to actually framing/composing a shot that's actually worth taking (albeit that's it's in focus and detailed!)

I'd say that a good photographer can still take good shots with any equipment, just that they'll be better shots with good equipment. I definitely aspire to being a good photographer and hope that, should I take a halfway decent shot, that with having some reasonable equipment that the end result will look OK - but it definitely doesn't make me take 'good' shots!

Re: Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM sample shots

i forgot i commented on this, in relation to past comments, may i add that in no-way would i be able to take a shot like these with the lens i have ., but in my head ,the images are there.. enter frustration [ and lack of funds ] so for me the comments are the same.. [wow] i need a good lens ,to get rid of the frustration, i know the shot i what, but cant get it.

So it is the equipment you have and it's the image in your head to capture it ,to create a shot that you like not someone else, If other peeps like your work then, it's a bonus.
This sounds like a rant but it's not

You do lose AF with a 1.4x TC (but you can get around this by taping over a couple of pins to force camera to AF - I've never bothered as I MF mostly anyway)

Hi have any of you, used the EOS 7D with this lens. The camera is now so good that I can tell the problems in quality of my tele-photo sigma lens. So now I am looking at a new lens. However I read one review bad mouthing this lens with the EOS 7D. So trying to get some other opinions before I spend the money.

Thanks

Ray

Re: Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM sample shots

Just an advisory to anyone who owns or is about to get one of these fantastic lenses. Mine has just developed a fault with the barrel friction system, it now won't tighten no matter how much I adjust it.

At 2 years old and only amatuer use I must say I'm just a little dissapointed.

I reckon it's because I tend to set the focul length with the barrel adjusted to tight, I now reckon it should be left on the loose side.

The good thing is I love my lens and it's fantastic for the work I do, the bad thing it's going to cost me £160 to get fixed and serviced.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I bought this lens with my 20D when both where new and have never had a problem with either. Every bird picture I have ever posted on this site was taken with the 100-400mm. My dream lens is a 250-600mm built the same way

I've not noticed any particular problems on the 7D but I'm no pixel peeper - but then I use the Sigma 150-500mm OS for it's better results (quality of result and 1-2 stops better stabilisation)
