Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM

Hi all,

I'm thinking about purchasing a second hand Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM to compliment my EOS 70D and existing macro kit. Has anyone any experience with this lens? Is buying second hand lenses advisable (apart from being substantially cheaper than new!) or any general comments?

Many thanks,
Les

Can't help with this specific lens Les, but I think that Mark has a 180mm sigma macro so he will be able to give you the pros and cons. 180mm will certainly give you more working room, but might lack the flexibility of a 100mm lens that can be used hand held in some situations.

I've got some used lenses and have had no issues. Most people will look after them, but you will get a few that will sell a lens if it has a fault.

Many thanks Graham. Indeed, the working distance will be a great advantage for skittish insects where the working distance of the 100mm would result in flight e.g. butterflies and day-flying moths. I suspect the majority of my work will still be tripod-based with some opportunist hand-held shots.

I think the Mark uses both the 100 and 180mm depending on what he is shooting.

I recently used www.mpbphotographic.co.uk to buy second hand, they sell at pretty reasonable prices and offer a 6 month warranty with all used gear, which gives you that little extra protection than buying from the odd rogue individual trying to palm off their faulty gear.

I'll be interested in how you get on with the 180, I've never used one. But like you think it would be good for the more skittish insects.

I will let everyone know how I get on with it. I suspect; however, the main 'target' may not be around for a while.

Re: Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM

Personally I use a 90mm 2.8 with a 1.4 converter for macro. As a 90mm lens I use it for portraits.
