canon EF 70mm - 200mm F/4 (non IS) L USM

Hi... I was wondering if anyone on here has had any experiences (good or bad) with this lens?
I'm mainly interested in nature photography including birds....
The price seems to have come down quite a bit and I'm thinking of getting one...
I understand that this lens is relatively light for an "L" lens, is a tripod collar necessary? Advis appreciated...

Paul

Most reports from users on here say that this is a really good lens.

I'm sure someone with practical experience will confirm this soon.

yip, i have this one and love it!

i got myself a tripod collar for it but i think ive only used it twice. Theres canon replice ones on ebay for cheap.

I mainly use the lens for motorsport and avaition and it works a treat. At the price you can get them nowadays its a bargain!

I'd def recommend it!!

Had one for over a year, and love it - probably the sharpest lens in my bag. Cracking image quality for the money - buy with confidence . Example shots (on a 5D, handheld):

I have it too - it is very sharp and for the money you can get it for 2nd hand, you can't fault it.

Collar probably not needed in the majority of situations, as you say it is light and not desperately long so it doesn't feel unbalanced on a tripod mounted by the camera.

coupla examples:

Re: canon EF 70mm - 200mm F/4 (non IS) L USM

Been trying it for a couple of weeks and coming around to it but am not as impressed by it as I thought I'd be (and if I purchased I'd definitely go for the IS as being very much more useful)

Oops! See you mean the f/4 - must spend more time looking . Tried the f/4 but the IS version and found it OK

Re: canon EF 70mm - 200mm F/4 (non IS) L USM

I had the f4 IS, but sold it and bought the f2.8 non IS as it didn't handle low light situations as well as I needed it to.

Re: canon EF 70mm - 200mm F/4 (non IS) L USM

I brought one back in 2003. It hasn't had much use in the past couple of years as I use a f2.8IS now. The f4 is to all intents half the weight of the 2.8 version and I don't think you'd need to worry about the tripod collar for most shooting situations.

The bargain L Lens in my eyes. Light & excellent optics.

Example shots here (shots 20-22)
