I have it, and I have to tell you it is probably my favourite lens in my kit! No IS, so maybe the reason the shots you saw were poor because they were handheld? I don't have very much recent macro work on this site, but you can check out my flower photos at www.echonorthphoto.com- they were all taken with this lens and i think it is 'just super!'

Cheers!

I've always been confused as to why IS is useful on a macro lens that more often than not would be on a tripod.

Re: Canon EF Macro 100MM F2.8L IS USM

I have the older model,, I grab it every now and then,,,. It is a great manual focus ready lens. Now looking into the newer one, it has been shown to be better and has rounded aperture blades like the 24-105. And a 67mm open end and it is lighter in weight. I could very easily be temped to grab one of these if there wasn't so many other things to get a hold of. I can hand hold my older one so I won't send it packing. Hope you enjoy your new lens.

Re: Canon EF Macro 100MM F2.8L IS USM

Sometimes IS or VR are great, but I think many of us can and have learned to work without them. For Macro, where you have a chance to use a Tripod I would certainly TURN IS or VR off! if shootiing handheld, nothing beats a nice BRIGHT day and a fast shutter speed to keep things looking sharp. In terms of the pictures in the link - well I think you best explain what are you not happy with them on cause as far as i can see the LENS component of it worked out just fine for most shots. Now you might not think highly of some of these pictures because of how the person took the shot or the lighting of the shots, but that is not a problem with the lens, but rather a difference in taste and skill level. Macro. like most other photography, is more than just the lens and alot to do with lighting.

Re: Canon EF Macro 100MM F2.8L IS USM

I've toyed with the idea of getting this lens - but @ £500/stop (it's only good for 2 stops at macro distances, 4 stops otherwise) it's a little bit too much of a luxury! IS/VR/OS is v difficult @ macro distances - hence the price and late arrival!

A tripod isn't always the answer as animate objects tend to move!

I'd wholeheartedly agree if you're just after a reference type shot but bright sunlight leads to high contrast and sharp/deep shadows (which admittedly can be mitigated by using flash - but I prefer working without). Give me interesting light any day - late afternoon sun which most definitely is not bright is perfect, for something a little more interesting
