Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens - Experience?

Hi everyone,

It's that time of the year when I think of treating myself to a new lens, and would welcome opinions on the above.

I have an EOS50D, with the EF 17-40mm L, EF 50mm f1.4 USM and EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM Canon lenses.

I am thinking of an 'every day' lens which delivers good quality results - call it a lens for going out and about with. The 17-40 is currently winner of the award for 'Lens Most Frequently Found on Camera' - I am thinking of something that can cover that sort of width but fill the gap to my telephoto zoom. I would not expect it to deliver the top quality of the 17-40. I have no intention of going full format.

All comments welcome, and thanks in advance
Ramzi

Not a Canon man, but many members swear by the 24-105 f4 as a general purpose lens. Not as wide as the 15-85, so I guess that what you value more, reach v coverage will sway your decision.

The 15-85 is a very good lens and will give you just over twice the reach of your 17-40 at the top end. You will tire very quickly of a 24-105 on a crop sensor, its that 24mm end that kills its versatility. I have a 17-55 f2.8 as my go to lens when quality is paramount but its heavy and limited for range however if its out for a casual walkabout with no particular goals I always stick on the Canon 18-135 'is', a super little lens and with a very usable range in a lightweight package and capable of really nice shots. Fraction of the cost of the 15-85.

I don't know how much the 18-135 is, but I would have thought that if you were going to consider this lens, an 18-200 - or even the Tamron 18-270 would have been even more versatile.

I have got a Nikkor 18-200 that I use on holiday and it is a really useful lens that covers 90% of my needs.

Re: Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens - Experience?

You are correct and there are a lot of options between 18 to 270 all with pluses and minuses. Optical quality, max/min aperture, weight, price etc etc. I only mentioned the 18-135 because I own it and like it and it can be picked up used for a very reasonable price. Ramzi you can get all the info on lenses on a plethora of review sites which I am sure you have already done but the best bet is to try some out on your camera if possible, (got a local Jessops or such like handy ?) its what I do when I can rather than rely on mtf figures and Lab charts which I think are sometimes useful for ferreting out the real duffers and showing the real stunners but there is the huge grey area of mid priced lenses where these reviews can be less useful and trying them out is the best bet if possible.

Re: Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens - Experience?

I have the 24-105mm but originally with a cropped sensor and although useful this was not an ideal lens/camera combination. However, for the last couple of years I have been using a full frame sensor and the 24-105mm really suits it well. While I have wider and longer lenses, I probably use the 24-105mm for 80% of my shots now and the quality is excellent. So I think that the lens you suggest will be good on your camera but you do need to think about whether you might move to a full frame in the future. If you buy an EF-S lens now, you will not be able to use it on a FF.

I have 1.3 crop and the 24-105mm works very well. On 1.6 crop it is a little different and I have naturally stopped using it on those cameras. I say an "EFs 18-200mm" for your walk around and start saving for a EF100-400mmL.

Thanks for your advice everyone, it's why I punted the question on a forum like this - lots of opinions, alternatives, 'have you thought...'s etc

And I was also keen to hear from anyone who has lived with one for a while too

All contributions gratefully received!
