Canon EOS 7D Mark II

Rumours are beginning to take on substance for the impending Mk II. Very interesting that there's suggestion of a Foveon sensor technology, not that I think it's likely (though I wish!) as that would be a massive u-turn for Canon having run it down for years (though mainly Canon fanbois). But it's the mere mention that I think is significant - an endorsement of technology that really is 21st century. I still say the quality of my Sigmas at their best has always outstripped my Canons at their best - it's just consistency and lenses that've been lacking!

Re: Canon EOS 7D Mark II

Interesting! Canon have been developing sensor technology for some time now - as have probably everyone else. I've noticed it more since they brought out their new camcorders.

Re: Canon EOS 7D Mark II

I do not plan to upgrade my 5D Mkii for now as I am well satisfied with the results. If I was upgrading, I would be looking for:

a. 14 stops dynamic range (as in the Nikon D800) perhaps the Foveon technology could help them achieve that.

b. Wifi - easy now

c. GPS - easy

d. An articulated screen - for some reason they seem to avoid including this useful feature on the more expensive cameras.

e. faster focusing (as per the Mkiii)

I cannot think of anything else I would need.

But they're all Bayer sensors and I'd guess reaching the end of their potential for improvement, coming up against the laws of physics

The massive and fundamental advantage that Foveon gives is true colours - Bayer has to rely on interpolation. Not too sure what Foveon'll do for Dynamic Range - I'd guess if sufficient processing is thrown at it, there'd be no problem

The remainder is in the hands of the bean counters!

Re: Canon EOS 7D Mark II

I had not studied Foveon closely but had thought that it had potential for higher dynamic range but see that its main advantage is more accurate colour. From my point of view, I have no problem with colour but I have a calibrated camera which produces almost identical colours to a calibrated Nikon equivalent. However, I usually take 3 exposures of any routine landscape shot and use gentle HDR unless it is comfortably with the DR of my camera. If I had a D800 with 14 stops (rather than my 11 stops), I would only need HDR for exceptional situations. So colour accuracy not really an issue for me but dynamic range is.

Don't like to run down new hardware, I really really feel that my 20D's "use 2", are just getting broken in. Can't stop now to spend 3000.00 dollars on a new run of cameras ., For what it's worth when retired I paddle the boat because I ran out of gas along time back....

I am the same, retired and still puffing along with my 20D. It is not the camera that counts it is what you point it at that is the picture.

Re: Canon EOS 7D Mark II

7D Mark III will be announced September 2019 before Photokina 2019. Bodies will ship November 2019.

5D Mark IV will be announced March 2015 or later. Bodies will ship weeks later.

Disappointments with the 7D Mark II:
- No WiFi (May be a reason why there's a SD slot for EyeFi)
- No 4K resolution video
- No CFast memory card slot for faster than UDMA7 reads/writes of 167MB/s.
