canon extender 2X ll

Can anybody tell me if the CANON Extender EF 2X II will enable my canon 100-400 1:4.5-5.6 L lens to autofocus.

Because I have this attatched to my lens and the only thing that works is the IS

Now im not sure, but is this due to the lack of light or is it faulty. Now when I say autofocus does not work, I mean it does not even hunt.

Cheers

No autofocus with 2x extender on L-series lenses <f/2.8 max aperture - sorry!

Re: canon extender 2X ll

When the 20D first came out, my first lens was the 100-400L IS. I bought a kenco 2X to see how it would work. This one doesn't have the contacts to tell the camera body that there is a converter, so I have auto focus in very bright light and good contrast at f4.5. Reading before hand about the problems I would have about focal length and aperture data being sent to the camera for auto focus to work, I never really expected much. I have learned to use manual focus and on bright days the focus will light up when focusing. Their is a lot of information on the web on by passing the contacts on the lens, but I would not recommend this as it will cause your camera focus motor to run nutty searching. With practice, manual focus works great, take off the 2X if you get tired of it and practice another day, but it will get better if you try.

You can fool the system by taping over three of the ten contacts on the lens, but that's not really recommended as it can leave some sticky gunge behind. As Boofers says, it's best to use manual focus or just do without the TC and crop.

Re: canon extender 2X ll

.... Been watching this thread.....
Need to ask....

I was "Encouraged" to buy a 2x converter for my 350D to put on the 200zoom instead of buying a bigger zoom....
In the end, I bought a bigger second-hand-but-immaculate-condition zoom, for just over the same price as the 2x converter....
I always wondered if I had done the right thing....

Would the addition of the 2x converter have disabled some of the functions of the lens?....

Re: canon extender 2X ll

It depends on the maximum aperture of the 200mm zoom. With a 2x extender you need f/2.8 with L-series lenses (10 contacts) and f/4 with other lenses (7 contacts), although the Canon extenders won't fit most non-L lenses.

In general you're likely to get better image quality with a longer lens rather than an extender, but of course it depends on the quality of the lenses.

.... Thats what I was thinking when I went lens rather than extender....

The lens I git is a Cosina, its good, the only negative I saw in any review was that the thing slid to fully extended if allowed to point downwards....
It does, btw... from personal experience....
But that doesnt detract from the quality of shot I get, which is as good as the Canon standard and sigma 200zoom..... well.... its good enough for my semi-amature-still-learning state.... lol.....
I suppose if I took it too seriously, I could look at a more expensive lens.... but then, perhaps a bigger Canon to put it on in the first place....
And if Wishes were Fishes..............
