Re: Canon Extenders on Sigma 70-200 2.8

Welcome to Pixalo Hav-Laz

Not a Canon user, but I would have thought they would. Someone who knows for sure will be along soon.

I've got a Sigma 1.4 converter and use it with the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 with good results.

I think Steve uses a Kenko 1.4, so if you are looking to buy a converter, you do have more choice than Canon.

Generally, the 1.4x is favoured in terms of image quality and will keep the autofocus with most lenses, but GSGary uses 1.4x and 2x converters and gets great results, but it could be his lenses are higher quality to start with.

The simple answer is yes.

You'll lose one stop with the 1.4x extender and 2 stops with the 2x extender. You'll also lose some image quality, but the amount and if you will notice it will depend a great deal on what subjects you are shooting and how good the light its at the time.

I've only used the Sigma converter, but the Canon ones are very expensive compared to the Sigma and Kenko - more than double the price, but does that mean the quality is better? I don't know.

I'd go for the Kenko Pro 300, which I believe Steve also has. The quality is very good and they're a lot cheaper than the Canon extenders.

BTW one thing to watch for with the Canon ones is that the front elements protrude quite a way beyond the mount, which could be a problem with some lenses. The Kenko ones do not protrude.

Here is a shot taken with my Sigma 70-200 f2.8 + the Sigma 1.4x converter

Here is a 100% crop from this picture

There are some compression losses - the hi res looks a lot better.

+1 to that, and also you'll lose autofocus with a 2x TC if the max aperture is smaller than f/2.8 (depending on the lens).

i don't care about the prise (83 $ difrence here in israel)

i don't write sigma cause it doesn't sell here, and i don't have time to wait for it from e-bay

so

OR

Re: Canon Extenders on Sigma 70-200 2.8

I've already voted for the Kenko. It's a safer bet because the front element doesn't protrude, so it can be used with a lens whose rear element is close to the mount.
