I have bought my wife a Canon IXUX 960 IS Got to work this morning and thought I take a couple since the sun was out. Set on auto and well pleased with the result. But the question is why, in auto, does the camera choose 1/200 @ f2.8? Why not close the shutter a bit since the lens was working at 7.7mm. Here's the shot.

The camera has done very well here Stephen - the exposure is nicely balanced.

As to its rationale in choosing the settings -

Was the IS on. Is "IS" always on in the auto mode or can you set it separately?

If its selected automatically "in the auto mode" whats the point in having a fast shutter speed at the expence of using the maximum aperture?.

Also what was the iso setting.?

Nice shot though. I was thinking of buying one of these at Focus to replace my wife's Nikon 7900 but all of the good offers were on DSLR's.

I've noticed that many P&S cameras are biased towards wide apertures and fast speeds on Auto. I guess the DoF isn't an issue with the small sensors, and the manufacturers probably think that most errors come from camera shake or moving subjects. Some of them only have two or three steps in the aperture setting anyway.

It's amazing what these little cameras can do.
