at the moment i cant afford a CANON L LENS i heard the EF S USM are the next best thing to the L lens could any body confirm this

EF-S are Canon also - I guess you meant you couldn't afford an L lens.

EF-S lenses project a smaller image circle than regular EF mount lenses - they're no better or worse, they just only fit 1.6 crop factor cameras so your 10-20-30D, 300-350-400-500D.

People could advise you better if you gave more information - what focal length are you after? what conditions will it be used in?

Don't buy a lens just because it is Canon L because it won't necessarily produce a better image. There are some cracking lenses that aren't L. First off - what do you need from a lens? Are you wanting wide, zoom etc and what will you use it for? Let us know what you want from a lens and we can ertainly help you.

If you buy an EF-S lens, please note that you cannot use it on a full frame camera. I bought the Canon 10-22mm EF-S lens for my EOS 20D but I accepted that when/if I ever upgrade to a full frame camera (EOS 5D or equivalent) I will have to replace ths lens. However, the performance of this lens has been great. I have since bought two further mid and longer focal length lenses but did opt for L glass lenses. I decided that I would not want to replace all lenses should I upgrade in the future. The L glass lenses are better than non L lenses but do cost a lot more so it depends on your budget.
