Canon Lens Help Needed !

Hi All,

I got a lens from Argos less than a week ago (90-300mm). Since then i have taken it back and had it replaced with another.

The problem is that it won't focus sharply on any subject, if i use my 18-55mm i get good clear images.

I use a Canon 400D which i know is know is not the best of cameras.. Any ideas please.

Re: Canon Lens Help Needed !

It should focus on something unless your within it's min. focusing point. That lens is not the best thing out of the box and the optics are not up to covering such a large range. However it should focus. If I was you I'd take it back and get a refund then save up for something better like the 70-300 IS USM, a cracking lens.

Hi, I am planning for a better lens but i just wanted a temp lens to tide me over until April. When taking the shot i see eveything sharp, but when loading it on the pc i get slightly blured shot, nothing totally sharp.

Simple take it back and get a refund. There is no reason to keep a crap lens you will never be happy with the pictures and you will not even be able to sell it second hand.

Re: Canon Lens Help Needed !

are you using the lens at its furthest focal length and are you using a tripod?
Not sure why u say the 400D is not a good camera tho its an excellent camera.
Im just wondering if itscamera shake, cos if its the lens not focussing you would know when u tried to autofocus as it would just continue to hunt.

Re: Canon Lens Help Needed !

I'll add to the votes for a refund. Put the money towards the 70-300 IS as stepheno suggests - I doubt if you'll be happy with the one you have even if you get a decent copy.

Fi's already said that the 400D is a very good camera - capable of producing photos as good as anything at a sensible price - so it deserves decent glassware.

Re: Canon Lens Help Needed !

Wooft....my 350D is feeling very poor with all this chat!

I tend to agree with FionaB. If you had it on autofocus it would not take a photo if it couldn't focus on something, right?

If you're hand holding it at 300mm then there will definitely be some blurring when you view it on full screen. You really need a tripod for telephotos if you want crisp images, and even then a lot of people will recommend a remote.

So am I correct in that you have had two from argos and both not focused.
1) The AF switch on the lens is on ? The AF usually complains and you can not take a photo unless it is in focus. With SLR this is strainge.
2) Is it camera blur ? What was the shutter speed? Can We see and example?
3) Do you have the latest firmware 1.1.1 ? D REBEL XTi / 400D Firmware-E

Re: Canon Lens Help Needed !

How out of focus are we talking as well.

My 350D shots where always a tiny bit soft, and I beleive the 400D shows slighlty more.

It drove me mad for a while with my 350D untill I discovered that you need to slightly post sharpen the pictures.

I believe it is caused by the anti moire filter in front of the sensor and gives a softness to your pictures. However this is just that a softness not out of focus.

There are many ways to correct it, mine being after research to use an unsharp mask of approx 150 with a pixel size of 0.5 in CS2 or Paintshop pro.

Like others have said though, once your unhappy you'll probably never feel comfortable with the lens.

ps Silky

It's not the number of buttons that's a problem - you simply have not enough fingers and too many thumbs.

Hi, I have read all the comments so far, I have flashed the camera to the firmware 1.1.1 so it's up to date.

I've done photography on and off over the last 20 years with medium format, now trying digital the results i get are far less. I think the AF on the lens i bought is very poor compaired to using a m42 screw adapter and the old screw type fitting len's.

I understand you get what you pay for and at 139, and i expected a bit better, There is plans for a nice big lens.... but i wanted something to tide me over until.

To any one buying this type of lens.... Don't, as i went out for the day with the family and took 174 photo's in normal sunny day conditions, every photo was blured. I was guttered.

Take it back and get the Sigma 28-300mm (i have the older 70-300), you can pick it up for a similar price online and it is a great walkabout lens for starters.

Re: Canon Lens Help Needed !

Adee, take it back. I had a Ef 70-200 f4L IS USM that had the same problem. I had to send it back to canon as it needed re-calibrating and a new IS system, it was just a duff lens, it came back perfect. Then hubby dropped it and it had to go back again, but is now still perfect.
If other lenses focus and this one doesn't, take it back asap.
