I have never even heard of. However, a Google provided some interesting info and it seems to be an interesting lens. Bearing in mind you can only use it for macro work and it's price it might be a luxury for some but if you want it and can afford it then buy it But I can't offer you any personal experience or thoughts.

Re: Canon MP-E65mm 1x-5x Macro

It's a very specialised lens with an extremely shallow depth of field. There is no focus ring. If you're just getting into macro and don't need the lens for a specific purpose I'd go for one of the 100mm range macros around.

Re: Canon MP-E65mm 1x-5x Macro

There is a guy on the Canon forum who produces some spectacular results with the said optic.
His name is Lord V.
In fact if you search Flickr.com for Lord V you will see some of his work.

Be prepared to be amazed!

I'd second that, start with a 100mm - 180mm and learn how to get the most from that. For still subjects add an extension tube or two to experiment with more extreme closeup. When you've outgrown that think about the MPE65mm. It's not an easy lens to get the best from and it's not cheap especially if you factor in the fact that you really need a decent flash, probably the mr14-ex or the mt24-ex tp able to cope with the small apertures required for suitable DoF.

cheers

Dan
