Canon Rebel Xsi 450D lenses ?

All -

I'm looking to get the Canon xsi 450D and would really like to know whats some of the best lenses for that body that offer a wide range of focal lengths.

Will the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lenses go well with the 450D given it's smaller-than-35mm sensor or will it have a strange effect on the resulting images ?

Tips comments suggestions would really be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Canon Rebel Xsi 450D lenses ?

Welcome to Pixalo Johnsocs

Lenses fall essentially into two groups. General purpose, often called 'walkabout lenses', and specialist that will better cope with certain types of photography.

As it appears you are more interested in "lenses for that body that offer a wide range of focal lengths", I'll stick with the general purpose ones here.

Many people think the classic general purpose lens is the 18-200 zoom. Most makers offer a lens either with these focal lengths, or very similar ones. Not sure if Canon do though. Look at the Sigma and Tamron ranges.

The strange effect you mention is that a 'crop' sensor will require you to multiply the focal length of the lens by 1.6 to see exactly what the focal length will be in 35mm terms. The 24-105 will give you 38 - 170, a very nice range, but lacking in the wide angle side, if you are trying to achieve this in one lens.

The Canon 24-105 is highly regarded with our Canon users, but also consider the 17-85 as a general purpose lens with better wide angle capabilities (if this is important to you), or the 18-200 lenses mentioned above.
