Canon speedlites

Any user or owner views on the 550ex. Lots on market at present as it is getting a bit long in the tooth but might present good value....

Re: Canon speedlites

As you know I'm not a Canon man, but in his review of the EX580mkII, Rob Barron said:

Quote:
I used the 550EX as my 'gun of choice because I had the 20D which used E-TTL. The 30D and 40D both utilise E-TTL ll and so now I have upgraded to the 40D I felt it was an appropriate time to get this much improved flashgun.
This leads me to believe that if you are going to purchase used that if you can get the EX550 in E-TTLmkII guise - that would be the one to go for. If it is not available with E-TTLmkII then you'd have to check out the differences in detail to see if it would best meet your requirements.

FWIW, I's suggest that in a studio/indoor environment you could (and should?) use manual so it would not matter what E-TTL it had, but for outdoor use I have to say that I rely on the excellent Nikon CLS system to provide fill flash in constantly changing conditions. This does however lead on to another question. If the main use will be indoor/studio, would the Lumopro LP 160 be a good bet as the new price is about 100 and it has the same power as an EX 580, or pretty much any older flashgun that has fallen out of favour due to not having the latest bells and whistles?

Re: Canon speedlites

i have two 550ex and a 580ex, the only reason i got hte 580ex is that the 550 is not completely compatible with the 7D but i love the 550's I bought both mine second hand and they are both still going strong and they get used a fair amount especially off camera, i reckon they are terrific value for money at the second hand prices they are going for! I use mine a lot off camera and in manual and they have never ever let me down.
