Presumably it's white "To reflect the sun and prevent it heating up and moving the sensitive optics". LOL!

Re: Cheap L Lens found for Canon
It's nearly the same size as my 4 inch refractor (that's a telescope for the inuendo crew)

Re: Cheap L Lens found for Canon
As I'm sure we can all admit, at one point we all 'knew' that a white lens meant it was an L-series lens. After a bit of education in lenses 101, we hit the point and realize that white doesn't necessarily mean L-quality.
I've read the reviews about this one, and it's most definitely not an L-series. The white is cool if you want to make people think you're sporting the 400mm prime, but the image quality is going to suffer a lot. If the quality was better, that big of a zoom would definitely be worth what they're charging. Just remember, you get what you pay for =)

Re: Cheap L Lens found for Canon
Looks a lot like the Phoenix lens they have on Amazon (minus the x2 adaptor), and there is some speculation here and there on the net that they are made by the same manufacturer.
There are some good and bad reviews at the Amazon link, but many of the bad reviews seem to come from people complaining they actually have to work settings ::gasp:: manually, as opposed to letting the camera do all the work for them. That being said, there do seem to be legitimate comments about the focus being soft, and warnings that just as with other telephoto lenses that when the lens is that large, camera movement is greatly magnified (almost requiring a tripod), and that you are going to get less than optimal results in less than brightly lit subjects. This is only what I have read, I have no experience with any lens this large and will gladly defer to my betters here. I do agree that you'll probably get what you pay for. While I could use this for some of my animal photography, the necessity of dragging along a full tripod along with me in the marsh isn't attractive.
