Compatability question...
Hi all,
Sorry to ask this but I really don't know. I have a Canon 350D which came with the standard 18-55mm lens. In addition to this, I also purchased: an EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 III USM lens, and an EF-S 60mm F2.8 Macro USM lens I have now started my C&G Photography course and rather than using my old and bulky Minolta Dynax 7xi film camera (which I am not familiar with at all and for which I only have one lens), is there a Canon EOS film camera which would work with any or all of the lenses listed above? I have no idea, and wasn't enlightened by looking at Canon UK - Home either. Any advice would be appreciated. I can then scour the ads... Cheers! Lucy

Re: Compatability question...
The canon EF-S system has only recently been introduced. The lens mount while looking the same is actually a little longer and so protrudes further into the camera body..this makes it incompatible with the majority of Canon camera bodies as it will foul on the mirror mechanism.
So basically your 18-55mm and EF-S 60mm F2.8 Macro USM lens will NOT work with the majority of bodies where as your EF75-300mm F/4-5.6 III USM lens (and any other EF lens) will. Canon EF lenses are by far the more popular out of the two types and have been manufactured for many many years. EF-S lenses are not that common yet and the ranges that Canon manufacture them in is also limited. It is also worth remembering that a 350D will accept both EF-S and EF lenses though so you'll not need to worry about compatibilty on your digital body. As long as you stick with a EF lens on virtually any Canon film body you will be fine. Hope that helps ![]() |

Re: Compatability question...
Lucy
I found this little number that might of some help to you, if you can buy one?? I think you're lenses should be ok but I'm sure one of the others will be able to tell you. When I did my C&G's they allowed us to use either film or digital so it might be worth asking saving buying another camera. Oh yes here's the link Canon UK - EOS 300 Good old flea bay eBay.co.uk - canon eos 300v, canon eos 300, Film Cameras, Camera Lenses items at low prices Hope it helps |

Re: Compatability question...
Thank you both so much for your quick responses. As a result, I have bought the EOS 300V from eBay at the "Buy it now" price of £85. VERY pleased! I don't mind getting this, as I am not comfortable using the Minolta - I've always found it too heavy - and will probably sell that now.
Also, I'm quite happy to get a reasonably good film camera and use this from day one on the course. I want to feel comfortable with it and really experiment with film. That doesn't mean I won't line up some shots with the digital first, perhaps! Thanks again. Lucy |
