Compatibility of F50 to newer lenses.

Hello. I'm a film major student and I'm planning to buy an F50 for one of my basic photography class. I just want to know if my AF-S nikkor 18-55mm (D3100 kit lens) compatible with the F50 and what functions wouldn't be available if I use this lens? Also, would the built-in meter work? Thank you! )

Re: Compatibility of F50 to newer lenses.

Hello red, and .

The short answer is you will be disappointed. The lens will fit the camera but the lens is designed to work with an APS-C sensor. Nikon call cameras that use this sensor DX cameras, and the lenses that will only cover this size of sensor are DX lenses. This sensor is half the size of film. So while you will be able to fit the lens to the camera the image it will project onto the film will not cover the whole film area.

Other lenses that Nikon make are FX lenses but these are not marked as FX. They will work with film SLRs and full frame (FX) DSLRs.

Hope that helps.

Welcome to Pixalo Red

You might be able to buy an F50 complete with a lens (or lenses). Also, old Nikkor (or third party) lenses that will be compatible with the F50 should be quite cheap as the market is geared to autofocus lenses now.

@grease spot yeah, I read that there would be vignetting but I thought I could still work with it if the effect wouldn't be so much. Anyway, thank you for replying and for welcoming me, guys I guess I'll just look for another camera. Thank you!
