Could try harder

I have this morning got two new lenses for the start of the year.
As some of you know I have recently forsaken Canon L s for Tamron, (as good but 1/2 the price.) As my Canon 50mm is getting a bit long in the tooth I went for the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art due to the review reports. I undid the box and found, the normal instructions, warranty etc. and the lens was in a lens case along with a lens hood, and the quality of the lens and case was superb.
Then I unpacked the Canon 28mm 2.8 IS (reviews indicating it would be good for interiors) again instructions and warranty,..... polystyrene packing and the lens in a plastic bag.! I had already ordered the hood as I know Canon don't supply them with non L lenses, that was another 46. !! In these days when third party lenses are as good and in some cases better than the "big two" you would think Canon would try to keep customers by at least matching the presentation, it seems that they have a notion that we will buy a Canon lens just for the red line / name or the white colouring on it. Personally the name on the lens means nothing it is the image on the screen that is important to me.
Before someone says the quality is better, in the last 6 years I have had 2 Canon 24 / 70 2.8 L, stop focusing so they had to be used in manual focus, and a 100 mm macro go the same way.

Re: Could try harder

Know the feeling. If I lost the lens good on my Sony 70-400 it would cost around 80 to replace and to be honest I don't see much difference between it and a plastic flowerpot as regards difficulty of manufacture

Re: Could try harder

Perhaps you have been unlucky with your Canon lenses which I assume were from new. It is impossible to draw sound conclusions from just our own experience though of course it influences our future choices. I have had 12 SLR/DSLR lenses over the last 35 years and 4 have failed one Soligor, one Praktica, one Vivitar and one Sigma. I current use 5 lenses between two DSLR's and three are Canon L, one is a non-L and one is a Sigma. There is little difference in the visible light image quality that you would notice in a photograph but the L lenses are weather proof so have a significant advantage. One of my cameras is converted to infrared and the Sigma lens is appalling for infrared which I did not know before I bought it.

Re: Could try harder

Looks like I have been unlucky with my lenses then Dave. I realise that for some the "weatherproof" aspect is important, up to a few years ago it would have been for me, but now all my photography is from a wheelchair or mobility scooter, I tend not to go out in bad weather and fit the lenses I expect to use for the event on two cameras to cut down on dust issues, so it is less important to me.
I still have 3 L lenses, along with 2 non L. 3 Tamron SP and 1 Sigma A.
Still we are all different, that's why photography is a great pastime.
