Re: could you give me an opinion on this??

Generally these are to be avoided as they're manual focus only, probably no metering, and probably not very high quality. On the other hand, I have been tempted every now and again just to try one for fun, but have never had enough spare cash to justify it

Generally speaking with lenses, you get what you pay for.

I would not be tempted by this lens.

Re: could you give me an opinion on this??

Stu, avoid those lenses like the plague, they are not worth even the low price they ask for!

The quality of the glass is rubbish, chromatic aberrations are horrendous. They are max aperture of f8 but if you put the 2xTC on that comes with it you are down to f16. You'll then be using a long lens, very hard to hold and needing strong sunlight just to get a shot. The definition of the resulting shot is nothing like the 'example' they show on the listing, trust me!

When something looks too good to be true, it almost always is! In this case it would be a £65 door stop.... no use for anything else

Cheers,
Rob

Do you want a recommendation for a prime 500mm, or are you open to other suggestions?

What sort of photography do you want to do with the new lens?

Re: could you give me an opinion on this??

If you are on a tight budget then this is the one to go for. It can be bought with different mounts (Canon/Nikon) so you should be able to get the one that matches your equipment. Also they do (or did) a cheaper version that is called the same but without the 'APO' in its name. This one should be avoided as for the cost difference the APO model far out performs its cheaper brother.

Re: could you give me an opinion on this??

Edit, you replied at the same time as me. I don't think that it is available for the Sony mount. You are probably tied into Sony's own (expensive) lenses for the time being until other manufacturers begin to make their lenses available (if Sony has allowed that under licence).

Either way, you absolutely must ensure that whatever lens you buy is compatible with the Sony system.

Re: could you give me an opinion on this??

Hmm, I'm going to jump in here and disagree! I personally think you'd have a whale of a time with this lens (the 500mm eBay one!), learn one hell of a lot along the way and may even get the odd good picture. The key is, if you're prepared to put in the time.

Downside to 'auto everything' is that brain goes into auto as well and, whilst the shot may be focussed and exposed correctly, the comp is rubbish! It's the old saying of 'I've seen great pics from a point and shoot camera and rubbish from an all singing, all dancing dSLR'!

I decided to go the M42 route (this lens is a T2 fitting) and picked up the adapter, a 400mm telephoto and a Zenitar 16mm Fisheye and put them on my Sigma SD10. OK, not every shot was a keeper but I was at the stage when the vast majority of comps were rubbish anyway! But I learned all about telephotos, fisheyes, maual focus, exposure and did come away with some good shots

Strange Bokeh and the 400mm Sigma not the sharpest of lenses but, I think, a not altogether shabby pic!

Sigma SD10, Sigma 400mm M42 telephoto, f/8 (possibly), 1/500, ISO100, rock rest, seagull

I have to watch lens flare but otherwise turned in some creditable pics (this one got a Highly Commended)

Sigma SD10, Zenitar 16mm M42 fisheye, f/8 (probably), 2 secs, ISO100, tripod, sunrise

So I say go out and grab these cheap and cheerful lenses! Don't expect great pics but you will learn along the way. "Better to have clicked and captured than never to have clicked at all"

Yeah, it's a T2 mount and you can get adapters for pretty much any camera. And, having got the adapter, you can use that on any other T2 mount lens!

Re: could you give me an opinion on this??

<off topic>I'll say that the fisheye shot is very good but that your Seagull picture has no detail or sharp focus anywhere, the composition is fine as that has nothing to do with the quality of the lens. Even if the lens that was used for that shot cost just £60 I would be extremely disappointed and consider it to have been a complete waste of money. </off topic>

Aidy, if the Sigma and Tamron lenses are available with the Sony mount, you will get far better results from those for the (slightly more) money outlay. My advice would be to look there for your lens while working to your budget.
