D300 Muliple expo question

My D300 has the abilty to carry out a multiple exposure of up to 10 shots each one is not saved as a individual image but is made into one image in camera, Obviously a different exposure setting is used in each individual picture, So someone enlighten me is this just a shorter way round than using the Brkting feature, (Thanks Nikon for not using a dedicated button), plus would this feature be another short cut doing HDR rather than using third party software etc.
One thing i find puzzling whilst in BRKT mode i can obviously change the amount between exposures in this Multiple exposure feature it seems you cant and the camera does it for you, although nowhere does it state what the differences are.

Not sure that this is right. I think that multiple exposures are simply saving images in the same file - nothing to do with exposures. (unless you have braketing set up too perhaps )

If you wanted to do multiple exposures with a film camera with that capability, you just cocked the shutter and then took another picture and the settings could remain the same. That way each of your images would remain the same, but be in a different place in the frame.

Re: D300 Muliple expo question

It's of very limited benefit in the digital world as you can combine images willy nilly. I's not instant HDR though. I have seen some adventurous fashion and PJ shooters use it where they need instant results.

One for the Nikon man at Olympia i feel then, I bought Simon Staffords book on the D300 and it clearly states that the exposure varies with each shot, Plus i cant see the point of overlapping up to 10 pics of the same setting.

If you have a darkish background and either a well lit foreground moving suibject or you light the subjects with flash you can produce pretty credible results.

Forgot to say in this post that the film camera would allow the shutter to be cocked without advancing the film, thus allowing multiple exposures on one frame.

Re: D300 Muliple expo question

D90 does that too - although fewer shoots i think... wondered what it was. tbh I'd rather do it in the camera. much quicker than ps i'd have thought.

Just to add some annoyance, D90 has a dedicated BKT button tbh i'm surprised the D300 doesn't - although u have 2 programmable buttons to the D90s' 1 - 1 which i had no idea what to use for

Re: D300 Muliple expo question

A few points:
  • You can change the number of shots taken in multiple exposure mode, it doens't have to be 10
  • The D300 *does* have a dedicated bracketing button, it's the bottom function button

Re: D300 Muliple expo question

I know the brkt button is there, although you can assign the button to carry out a different operation, its almost as if they built the thing and then "Oh look the brkt buttons left over" and lobbed it out the window.
And then someones been left to re think.

Re: D300 Muliple expo question

I would think this would be more useful when shooting something moving within the same frame. For example if you are photographing someone coming down some stairs you could get them to appear in multiple locations in the same image.

I don't see it much use for HDR at least not when there are so many other, better, solutions for that.

Re: D300 Muliple expo question

I have a D300 but I have not used the multiple exposure mode yet, but I thought it just piles each picture on top of each other where you can get some very strange and wacky results! when I get the chance I will have a go and see what happens...........

I believe one of the settings on the D300 multiple exposure menu is to have the camera adjust the exposure of each shot for you.
