D3x v D3 pricing

Looking at Grays website i see they are now selling the D3 for 3199 thats now getting on for 700 more than what it was 12 months ago, Yet the D3x is now under 5k ......just. So a camera costing 5500 on release now loses 500 and one that has been around a while suddenly increases by 700

Re: D3x v D3 pricing

The D3 was 3499 on release. The list price for the D3 is now 3199 but you can still find it comfortably for under 3K. The D3X is still a list price of 5499 that price for Grays is very good, most places retail price is still well over 5 thousand.

Normally they are exey, but what an experience to shop there it's like being in Saville Row Tailors.

I hate the strong pound as much as the next guy for prices but for once I have not had the "Should have waited for the price to fall" pangs recently. That said last week was the end of the Financial Year so I had to buy some stuff again and despite the credit crunch deals were not that great on Nikon stuff even if you were buying a few things. In fact I got a better deal last year so I suspect that the margins are very tight with those prices.

There are signs in other markets of improvments, I still think its only time before the prices come down on photographic equipment!

Re: D3x v D3 pricing

You need to be aware of market slicing and cameras are one of the best examples. Once a new model is released the price is intentionally high and the manufacturere knows that only the well off who MUST have the new model immediately will buy (a small percentage but a high price). Within a short time (probably weeks) the price drops and the next slice of the market is those who MUST have the new model early but look for that first price drop. This continues until a fairly stable price is reached which then tends to reflect production costs plus profit. A final slice may be a further reduction to clear old stocks after a new model is released. The additional income from the early slices will often pay for the R&D without which there would be no new models.

Clearly in recent months this effect has also be masked by the 40% drop in the pound against the Yen. One effect of this is that a recent new Canon model initially dropped in price then went up in the UK but no doubt its price in Yen has continued to fall.

Re: D3x v D3 pricing

I am on a waiting list waiting for a new car. The price continues to rise and they have just said that in order to buy they wil be asking you to sign a contract that if you sell it within the first 12 months, other than to trade it in with them, you have to pay a 30% surcharge Clearly the credit crunch is only hitting certain areas.
