D50 and Nikon 70-210mm Series E Problem

Hi People hope you are all well

I impulse bought a 70 -210mm Nikon E Series Lens for my D50 yesterday, only paid 26 quid for it from a bayer, anyway lens arrived today and i suspect its faulty? wonder if you can help?

this is the exact lens here http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70210f4.htm

Lens was posted in only 1 layer of bubble wrap...Impact damage maybe?

Symptom

Upon attaching the lens to the camera this afternoon i took maybe 4 photos and they were completely blown out with light...After charging D50 Battery and trying again this evening i cannot get the set up to even take one single shot... in fact most of the menu settings are greyed out and the screen display at the top of the camera wont let me adjust any settings whatsoever.... F stop just reads ...

F- -

flashing constantly?

Any help greatly appreciated i just need to know if the lens is faulty or just not compatible with my camera although i have heard any nikon lens is compatible with my D50 so maybe im missing a setting or switch etc on the lens itself?

Regards and thanks in advance

I'm no Nikon expert but that lens was only made for 18months during 1986/87. That makes your lens at least 23 years old and I think the chances of it being compatible with your D50 are slim. Dabhand will probably correct me but that's my guess.

You have locked the lens at the smallest aperture, haven't you?

If you have, I think you are right Stephen. Although the mount is compatible, there have been lots of changes in focus and metering since this lens was made, so the electronics probably don't match up. Should work OK in manual.

Might be worth getting a second opinion though.

Always a good place to start is to clean the contacts on the lens mount.
