D80 AF-assist illuminator lamp stopped lighting up

Under no circumstances does my AF-assist illuminator lamp light. The last time I would have actually made a point of using it would have been months ago, but I don't know for sure when the last time I saw it light up was.

A few days ago I was hit by a car on my bike while wearing the D80 around my neck. It was a pretty slow impact and while I needed stitches in my ankle, I didn't break any bones and I reflexively (stupidly?) used my left hand to protect my camera through it all, and snapped photos while I waited for the ambulance.

So, my question are:

I've gone through and turned it on and off multiple times in the menu and looked through the manual and camera menus. Is there anything I can do that might turn it back on?

With everything else working on the camera fine, what are the odds that the AF-assist bulb broke from some kind of impact? (That or anything else)

How do I go about getting this fixed? (I'm in Japan and bought the camera in Japan in early March.)

I think it has something to do with the focus mode and shooting mode.
Don't worry, mine did the same, it's not a fault I just can't remember what to do.
Try putting it on green square mode and afs focus mode.

I think it is a menu option to have the AF assist light activated or not. Must be worth checking this out before you do anything else.

Indeed it is, look in Custom Setting Menu, item 04 AF-assist.

Mine illuminates, in a darkened room, on most of the dial settings, it being dependent of course on the ISO, aperture and speed settings for those modes that have a dependency!

I believe it will only work in low-light situations, and if certain AF settings are used. I remember something like this happening with the D50 I had, where if I had it set to AF-C it wouldn't use the AF assist. I think. Good luck either way. If nothing works, you may want to take it to a camera shop for a hands-on inspection.
