Decision Time Has Come

I NEED SOME URGENT ADVICE PLEASE.
I HAVE SOLD MY NIKON 18 - 70 LENS. I HAVE A WEEK IN WHICH TO BUY A NEW ONE.
I KNOW I HAVE ASKED THIS BEFORE BUT NOW IT'S CRUNCH TIME.

DO I BUY A TAMRON 18 - 200 , TAMRON 18 - 250 , OR TAMRON 28 - 300.

THE 28 - 300 DOES NOT SOUND VERY GOOD ON BUILD QUALITY, ALSO LOOSE A LOT
ON WIDE ANGLE END, WHICH IS NOT A GREAT PROBLEM . BUT I AM REALLY NOT SURE
ON THE OTHER TWO.

AS MUCH AS I WOULD LIKE TO I CANNOT AFFORD THE NIKON 18 - 200 VR.

SO HELP PLEASE P. S IF I COULD AFFORD THE NIKON 18 -200 VR ,IS IT WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY ? THANKS

To be honest Woody,if I was you I would have kept the 18-70 and bought a 70-300 or similar!.Depends what are your photo priorities.I assume that you, like me,want a reasonable quality single 'do almost everything you need' lens?.In which case is the wide angle of 18-200/250 more important than the extra reach of the 28-300?.I have a Sigma 18-135 and am happy enough with results and build quality.Afraid I cannot comment on those you mention.

Re: Decision Time Has Come

Woody - what a dilemma!

The Nikon does get really good press. Can you get an advance on your Christmas pressey? The VR technology might be of great use to you too.

My view is that 28 is not wide enough, so we are left with the 18-200 and the 18-250.

I've always belived that high ratio zooms are less desirable than one of around 3 or 4:1. The old standards zoom of 24-70 and 80-210 fell into this category. However, lens technology has moved on in the meantime, and although all of these lenses are above that ratio, I suspect the image quality has not fallen off in the same way it might have done back then.

I can only suggest that you get as much information as you can on the Sigma 18-200 and 18-250 to choose between them. But if I could, I'd go for the Nikon. You know it makes sense!

Re: Decision Time Has Come

THANKS DABHAND, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR PROMOTION TO THE PIXALO CREW.

I HAVE TRIED GETTING AN ADVANCE ON THIS YEARS CHRISTMAS PREZZIE BUT NO JOY

I KNOW THE NIKON MAKES LOTS OF SENSE, BUT I AM TRYING TO JUSTIFY THE PRICE.

HAVING THE V R WOULD BE A GREAT ADVANTAGE FOR ME, AS I HOLD MY CAMERA
WITH ONE HAND, IT WOULD STOP CAMERA SHAKE, HOPEFULLY

STILL BOILS DOWN TO THE FACT IT'S ABOUT £250 DEARER THAN THE TAMRON , IS IT
THAT MUCH BETTER.

AS THIS WILL BE THE ONLY LENS I WILL BUY FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE , I WANT TO MAKE SURE IT'S THE RIGHT ONE. A LOT OF SLEEPLESS NIGHTS AHEAD
I THINK.

Re: Decision Time Has Come

I'll make it easier for you . I had the Nikon 18-200 for a few weeks. Didn't have much time to play with it, but it was beautifully built. BUT... how long is the waiting list for one these days.....not long ago it was up to 4 months. If that is still the case, are you willing to wait ? If not, it helps you slim down that selction

Re: Decision Time Has Come

I KNOW WHAT YOUR SAYING ABOUT DELIVERY TIMES DAVE.
CAMERAWORLD SAY THEY HAVE IT IN STOCK, SO DO A FEW OTHER PLACES I HAVE SEEN

BUT HAVE THEY REALLY GOT IT. A FRIEND OF MINE ORDERED A NIKON 18 - 70 PLUS
A NIKON 70 - 300 V R FROM A B C DIGITAL CAMERAS. THEY TOLD HIM THEY WERE IN
STOCK, FOUR WEEKS LATER THEY HAVE ONLY JUST GOT THE 70 -300 IN.

THEY SAY THERE IS NOW A DELIVERY PROBLEM WITH THE 18 - 70.
THIS IS THE REASON I HAVE SOLD HIM MINE NOW, AS HE NEEDED IT URGENTLY.

I THINK BECAUSE OF THESE DELIVERY PROBLEMS, A LOT OF PLACES ARE HIKING THEIR PRICES UP. PRIME EXAMPLE JESSOPS WANT £ 299.99 FOR THE NIKON
18 -70 MM , WHICH I THINK IS EXTORTION.

UNFORTUNATELY WITH INTERNET SHOPS, YOU DON'T KNOW WHETHER THEY HAVE
THEM IN STOCK OR NOT.

Re: Decision Time Has Come

Most folk here rate one-stop digital as being a pukka place. You can e-mail to ask if they have stock.

Re: Decision Time Has Come

Woody if this is going to be the only lens you are going to buy in the foreseeable future. Then definitly a nikon 18-200 vr. No doubt about that. If I ever manage to get the money together then I think I would go for the 18-200 vr. And I would wait untill I could afford it, which is certainly not going to be in the next year or so

The reviews are good, the lens is supposed to be fantastic. Can't you borrow the 70-300 from your mate so you still got a good lens to shoot with.

Re: Decision Time Has Come

ITS HARD TO READ CAPS

I didn't read all of your post but agree the 18-70 is a nice lens and hard to beat if you like zooms and don't want the silly priced 2.8 zooms

you could try a 50 1.8 and the 70-300 vr if you don't mind loosing wider angles - good quality and reasonably priced combo

just a thought,. I will be less lazy and try to read your posts next time

Re: Decision Time Has Come

That would give you some more time to gather the money.

And I know myself. When i've got my eye on something and go for the cheaper solution. I still end up buying what i wanted in the end. So it gets rather expensive. Now I don't do that anymore, i need to learn how to be patient and wait till I can afford what i want

But have you tried onestop, cause they are good.
