Do I swap my Tamron 18-200mm for a 28-300mm?

As above guys, I think I would like to change my 18-200mm tamron lens for a 28-300mm?

Does anyone recommend this exchange?

I now have a wide angle lens, so dont really need the lower end of the 18mm, but would like the high focal range of the 300mm compared to my 200mm.

I am just concerned if I will be losing out in quality over quantity on the higher lens?

Has anyone owned the 2, or tried out the 28-300mm. And what are their thoughts on them?

Cheers all.

Dave

You could always go for a 2 x multiplyer tube that would double you lens up 36 - 400

Re: Do I swap my Tamron 18-200mm for a 28-300mm?

Upside to a Teleconverter is that you gain 1.4x or 2x
Downside is you lose 1 stop with the 1.4x and 2 stops with the 2x, a loss of quality and very often AF won't work with 1.4x and usually won't work with 2x

But they're useful to have to gain instant reach - I've the 1.4x for a good compromise of reach vs quality/light loss and AF works on the 300mm but not on the 'untaped' 100-400mm

Why not think about the new 18 - 270. It is getting very good reviews, I have just bought one but have not yet had time to use it. That way you will have the best, well almost, of both the lenses you are thinking off. The 18 - 270 also has stabilisation built in. That way you could leave the 18 - 270 on your camera most of the time.

If you still want a longer reach you are going to have to look at something else - possibly the Sigma 150 - 500

The reason I am thinking of this is that I can px my current lens for this one for an extra £50. Although it is used, I think it is still a good price?
So do you think it is worth that trade?

Re: Do I swap my Tamron 18-200mm for a 28-300mm?

I have the Tamron 18-270 and am very pleased with it. To repeat what others have already said, the main advantages over the 28-300 are that the 18-270 is a full-range lens so you can leave it on the camera all the time if you wish, and image stabilisation is *very* useful for hand-held shots, especially at longer focal lengths.

You ever use the 28-300 at all, if so what you think of it?

I have a 10-20mm so will exchange to that for lower focal range.

Just that this price seems a very good buy £150 basically for the 28-300mm. And just my old lens and £50 for px.

Wont be paying full price fo a new lens, its just I think I have a good opportunity to change here for little money. otherwise I will just keep my old one if there is hardly any change?

I've never used the 28-300 but I knew someone who had one and he liked it. If the deal seems good, give it a go!

A good deal is one that makes both parties happy..............go for it.

I think I would prefer that combo.

It was if you don't mind manual focusing

I think Silky is right - the 18-270 is a far better bet as you retain the wide end without having to change lenses. Also the 18-70 range is far more useful and is used a lot more than the 270-300 bit you miss from the 28-300.

Re: Do I swap my Tamron 18-200mm for a 28-300mm?

Bigger Longer lens is like wanting a faster and hotter car...it is never enough......I alays say that your best zoom is your feet and it is best to take the best picture in front of you that you can than to try to take a possibly good picture IF YOU ONLY HAD A LONGER lens. For example, there is not much gain between a 400mm and a 500mm but the price difference is huge. I used to shoot birds and think I need supe rlong lenses after awhile I learn that knowing your birds will let you get closer to them without getting longer lenses.
My two cents worth.
