Re: Do We Need Image Stabilization

IS really does make a big difference Bear. It is always useful for getting sharp shots at lower shutter speeds but especially so when taking telephoto shots as of course they are more prone to camera shake.

IS does cost more and only you can decide whether or not the extra outlay is worthwhile but unless you do all your telephoto shots with a tripod, I would strongly recommend IS as being a very worthwhile extra IMHO.

Cheers,
Rob

IS or VR is worth its weight in gold when it comes to BIG GUNS and shooting wildlife. If you subject moves and you are using a big gun tele, then VR or IS usually make a difference between acceptable to good picture verus ..well you know what. Unless you are shooting in a super blazingly bright day or you are using one of those big tele that cost the price of a small car (giving you an f2.8 or at least f4) IS and VR are the next best thing.

Re: Do We Need Image Stabilization

Well I happen to have a problem in my hands and IS and VR (yes i have both Canon and Nikon) helps me not only in distance shots but also close . Furthermore IS and VR help in lowlight conditions as well so you can shoot with shutterspeeds that are slower than without is or vr would have been possible

Okay one more thing......something obvious...but I will say it anyways....for BIG BOYS...most of them aren't designed to be shot handheld.....most comes with a tripod collar for a reason. Even a monopod will help alot

Re: Do We Need Image Stabilization

My 24-105mm and 70-200mm are both IS and I find it very effective. I use the 24-105mm most frequently and IS is great when taking low light shots. I have even been able to take an HDR set at night hand held using IS. I know I should have used a tripod but an opportunity arose with no tripod handy.
