Re: E o s 400d and sigma.

Sigma make converters and Kenco are generally well regarded, but bear in mind that you will loose two stops with a 2x converter and the autofocus will not work.

Also you will need to either have an immaculate technique or a decent tripod and/or monopod to avoid camera shake at long focal lengths.

Interestingly, the 70-300 is not listed in this chart - so maybe your lens cannot be used with a converter. Best to check with Sigma before you buy.

Re: E o s 400d and sigma.

I've used an 80-200 + a 1.7x converter with a Nikon D300 - so equivalent to about 540mm - at a range of 12 feet and concluded that for small garden birds this was not long enough!

You can, of course crop your images to make the birds bigger, but they will need to be absolutely perfectly sharp to enable this option, and cropping has its limitations.

Re: E o s 400d and sigma.

You might think that these two are OK

But these are the uncropped shots taken with a 540mm lens at a range of 12 feet

Re: E o s 400d and sigma.

I have a Kenko C-AF Teleplus 2X MC7 which I paid 70 for and it works fine with my 400d and Tamron lens
As Dabhand said though, you lose your AF.
