Ebay - buyers warnings
I was / am looking for the Sigma 10-20 and 30 mm 1.4 lenses for my Canon 40d and came across the following on Ebay. It is a set of warnings and info about buying cameras and lenses.
eBay.co.uk - For Digital SLR, Camera Lenses, Photography Reviews & Guides I thought the one about Nikon lenses guarantees was very interesting if you have one of those. I had not seen this before so I thought I would pass it on. |

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
Interesting and worth thinking about. I'm about to buy a lens from ebay. So i'll make sure it is from a dealer.

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
Thanks for this... I just bought a New Sigma 105mm f/2.8 off of Ebay and didn't think of this, lucky for me I did buy from an authorized dealer. But good to keep in mind for future purchases!

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
I've bought several camera items and lenses from ebay and never had a problem, although I generally use Kerso. I'm selling my 70-200 on there at the moment.

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
I also buy from Ebay and have had no problem. The warning was that you could buy a new Nikon lens and wind up with no guarantee at all becaus eof the way Nikon applies their rules

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
No more dealing with ebay for me! Just sold lens and buyer is from Poland! I had stated uk only as post is too expensive. He has uk address for relative, but would like my bank details to pay money to me! I don't think so. So now I have to send 2nd chance offer to next person down, where are they!!! Germany!!! So have to go to 3rd on list. Now have to pay 2 lots of final fees if he wants it and then claim one back. Meanwhile 1st bidder keeps sending whining emails about how safe it is to give bank details, how many times can one say NO! Have told him no more, it is being sent to next buyer! AAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!!
Phew, rant over. |

Thank you Hooky! Not heard from second chance person yet, so will probably end up relisting the lens tomorrow.

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
Having had the same problems in the past I now insist on Paypal or local collection with cash in hand. Last time I had some guy trying to persuade me to ship a laptop to Uganda (or somewhere like that) and all the while he's telling me the Paypal has been sent.
It was a blatant attempt to play on a gullible seller. I reported them but by the next day the eBay account was closed. I resent paying the premium to Paypal but if you go into the transaction knowing you have to do so it does make for greater peace of mind - IMO of course. ![]() |

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
I did specify Paypal and uk only, but the amount of questions asking me to ship it abroad! I kept getting emails from poland last night, all saying send me your details, it's very safe! LOL! Replied politely to each one saying no and finally that I had offered it to next buyer. Who has not responded yet. So will have to relist later and claim back final listing fees. I aslo resent the paypal charges, but at least it's safer.
Oh well, back to sorting out the 400 shots I took at a race this afternoon. Out for dinner & back onto ebay to relist lens. |

Update - Hooray!!! Second chance offer was accepted and they paid straight away so not having to relist.

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
True, but I don't use cheques an awful lot now. This one just felt dodgy, bidder was in Poland, but had uk delivery address for relative and was pushing the give me your bank details just a bit too hard.

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
I didn't think giving bank account and sort code to someone posed any risk (all bank transfers require this information), but you did the right thing in that if you're ever unsure or just plain uncomfortable about it - don't do it
Glad to hear it's all sorted now ![]() |

Re: Ebay - buyers warnings
With alot of people, I would be happy with a bank transfer, but something about the emails seemed wrong, can't put my finger on it but dodgy. Apperently they bought loads on ebay that way, but only had feedback of 2 things in Poland?
Still, went to next bidder and I've checked with the PO that it's arrived, so hope for some good feedback and just have to get final fee refunded now. |
