You will get a better image with a prime but the price you pay is lugging a heavy lens around.

I doubt you will be able to get a convertor because most super zooms rear element extends behind the lens mount during focusing which will foul on the tcon elements ruining both lenses. It's a shame you have canon because since you will be manual focusing anyway there are a lot of MF 400mm lenses out there for other makes that are about the same cost as decent teleconvertor.

I had a look at a prime two thing changed my mind , to heavy and to heavy . so any suggestions for a lens that will give a fighting chance of photographing some wild life , The best I have is the Sigma DC 18-200 OS, which i get reasonable results from but I need more focal length without another slipped disk .

Re: Extender and a Sigma DC 18-200MM

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to fit a converter on to any 18-200 as the rear elements will foul it.

If you don't want a physically heavy lens you are pretty much left with the 70-300 range or maybe a 400 or 500 prime.

I'm not sure if the 70-300 will accept a converter, but the loss of one or two stops will perhaps limit what you will be able to do with it and the AF may not work.
