Re: extension tubes
Extension tubes will let you focus closer, and therefore achieve higher magnification. Although some types allow autofocus, manual focus may be easier and give better results. The focus shift works at both ends - with the tubes fitted, the maximum focus distance will also be reduced, so you may not be able to focus on anything more than a short distance away.
Tubes are a relatively cheap way of achieving true 1:1 macro without using extra glass that degrades the image, and without the need to buy a proper macro lens. However, focusing may be tricky as most normal lenses have fairly coarse focus adjustment. It's often easier to set the focus on the lens and move the camera to and fro until the subject is sharp. Also remember that the depth of field is very small at high magnification.
