Eye opener

Like several folks here I have been looking at lighter kit, I took the plunge and despite reservations over the huge zoom range, (24 / 400) I got a Leica V lux type 114.
It came with free lightroom 6 and a 3 year warranty, I got the flash unit, spare battery and a bag all for under 1200.
I used it this weekend alongside my 1Ds3 for an event at the museum and am blown away with the quality of the images from the 1inch backlit 20 Mp sensor.
Yes you can see the difference compared to the Canon, but for up to A4 prints it is harder to spot than I imagined.
It needs a bit of getting used to as It's been years since I had a camera with "knobs" on, and over the day knocked it from single shot to burst, and aperture to shutter priority, bit annoying but something to get used to.
It wont be replacing my series1 cameras but it will be my "carry round" for casual photography.
I used it for some of todays up loads, "jumper" (in sport) and the goat shots. I took images at varying zoom from 24 to the full 400 and the results were excellent at all lengths, at the longer ones the 5 axis stabilisation did a great job even if it is a bit audible.
To sum up, I like the Leica.

Re: Eye opener

Fabulous pose in the jumper shot. Looks like that event was fun, going by that and the other shots.

The goat shot is also nice and sharp looking. Seems to be a great carry around camera.

Re: Eye opener

Thanks Colin, Chris, in the full size image you can see the jumper is about 3 inches off the ground, I was pleased with that one. I did make a real beginners mistake on one of a girl doing a star jump off the top and cut her head off at the sweat band so binned that one. No excuses, just messed up.

Re: Eye opener

Have to ask why you opted for the Leica rather that the Panasonic FZ1000?

Re: Eye opener

Graham, I checked out both, and the Leica's different processing algorithms gave a better result in RAW, the body felt better, slight build differences, there was a free Lightroom 6 included (DXO wont recognise the raw images) and a three year warranty.
Vicar, it was the fact that taking into account the image quality, some function variations, the LR6 plus the extended warranty it actually works out better value than the Panasonic, (250 more).
I wouldn't just go for the badge as any accessories are hugely expensive i.e. the bags with Leica on are upwards of 200 ! so got a Lowepro one, the battery is likewise expensive but the Panasonic one fits so got that.

Fair enough

I'd have gone the same way with those differences.

Charles my comment was not meant to offend. Please take it in the spirit of someone who is happy at your purchase. Mae culpa

That's OK vicar, no offence taken, I have a friend who is a vicar and he actually suggested I was turning into an OAP poser!

Re: Eye opener

In that case I will join your friend in calling you 'an OAP poser' as a fellow vicar.
