Filter cracked - what to do?

I took my camera out of its bag yesterday to discover that my Hoya 67mm polarising filter has cracked.
I haven't dropped it or banged it - I have absolutely no idea how this has happened.
I unscrewed it and blew on the lens but can still see tiny fragments at the edges. I really don't know what to do about this - any advice?
Any idea how this happened at all?
Thanks in advance

Re: Filter cracked - what to do?

If it's only the edges affected, it's a "full frame" lens (i.e. not EF-S, DC, etc) and a crop factor camera then you could get away with continuing to use it!

There again, binning it is probably the wise thing to do!

Re: Filter cracked - what to do?

Thanks for the advice. The lens itself is fine - I'm just not sure how to get the tiny fragments of glass from the smashed filter out of the threads. I'm really shocked that the filter has smashed with very little impact - is this usual?

Re: Filter cracked - what to do?

A small soft paintbrush will get rid of the glass splinters.

Air duster may blow the shards under the protective ring around the front element.

If you camera is left in an unheated room it could have simply got very cold and the aluminuim band round the filter shrunk.
