First Lense
I am new to this game, and therefore in a bit of a first lense (and camera) dilemma. I want a good all rounder lense for landscapes and portraits, and thought of the sigma f2.8 24-70 to go with the 400d. Then realised I can get the Nikon d80 with the 18-70 3.5-4.5 kit lense for the same money. (Would that be a better choice maybe with a 'nifty fifty'?) I guess I am wondering how vital the f2.8 bit is.(the pros seem to like it). To make matters even more complicated again, you can get a refurb d80 with 18-55(refurb) and 55-200VR for similar dosh....

Re: First Lense
it all depends on which system you like. buying the first dslr is much more than just a camera purchase. now is your time to choose which brand to choose, nikon or canon. Handle each camera at a nearby camera shop.
and each lense you have named are very good. the f2.8 is importand for lowlight situations and it will also give a nice shallow DOF, so important to portraits. this is your choice, nikon and canon both make exceptional glass and cameras, you just have to decide which one 'feels right' to you. good luck in your dicision |

Re: First Lense
Everything liljj says is true but one does have to consider what you are prepared to spend. More dosh usually means more quality. I can give you my opinions on Canon lenses but you will have to ask others about Nikon
Oh and don't forget....although Canon and Nikon are the big players others, like Olympus and Pentax make excellent cameras although their lens and accessory support are not extensive.
