Question Flash compensation ??

I have recently bought an SB600 for my D50 and was messing about with it at the weekend. I was trying some outdoor portraits and leaving the flash on iTTL, this was putting out too much light on the persons face. Am I right in thinking that pressing the combination of the flash and exposure buttons with the dial wheel turns down / up the power of the flashgun. With a setting of -1.0 I was getting better results. Was I doing the right thing ??

Re: Flash compensation ??

For outside take a look at Automatic Balanced Fill-Flash on page 33 of Nikon SB-600 manual here :- ftp://ftp.nikon-euro.com/Manuals/uNL...B600-En_01.pdf

Page 44 explains how to adjust Flash output-level to compensate exposure of main subject

I'm still struggling to get correct results outside with the SB-800, so your not alone

Re: Flash compensation ??

First, ensure that your flash is set to TTL BL mode for regular shooting - this ensures that the ambient exposure and flash output are balanced (BL) to create a pleasing, natural look.

If that still washes out your subject, then dial in some -EV flash compensation on the SB-600 itself... use the minus button on the rear and you'll see a the Flash Exposure Compensation value change to a negative number in 1/3 increments.

Most folks swear by leaving this constantly at -2/3, but it's best to experiment till you get the look you want.
