Are theses of any use in the macro world? I was looking at buying a Manfrotto focus rail, but the cost of 70£ put me off

Re: Focus/macro rail

Get what you pay for, that [Manfrotto focus rail] & the Velbon mag slider are the most useful at this price

Re: Focus/macro rail

I've got a velbon and it's excellent but to be honest I only use it for static subjects if I'm out in the field I use a high ISO or a flash cos things don't hang around long enough.

Re: Focus/macro rail

I'm sure that there are a couple of threads discussing these somewhere. Some people use the Chinese ones. They are maybe not as well made as the main brands and might not be as precise in their adjustments but might do the job for you.

There might be more too.

Re: Focus/macro rail

As mentioned in the other thread, I bought a Chinese clone to go with my MPE 65mm and EM-140 flash. Although it all adds up to significant weight, it works very well but it's not exactly something that gets put in the camera bag as a matter of course!

Re: Focus/macro rail

As others have said got a Velbon but don't use it much, most of my macro is freehand. Ideally you set up with a tripod and a macro lens for the best results but nobody tells the butterflies so they usually fly off whilst you are setting up.
