That's a pretty nifty idea that! There's no reason it couldn't be made out of thin black plastic to give it less of a home made feel either!

To be honest £30-£40 for a lens hood doesn't exactly break the bank.
The high cost for the Super telephoto prime hoods is because they are made from Carbon Fibre. Remember also that all Canon lens hoods have a felt lining to reduce reflection from light bouncing off the plastic into the lens. |
