fuji S9100 Macro Lens

Hi... I just purchased a Fujifilm S9100 digital camera and since I do macro photography exclusively, I am looking to add a macro lens... Fujifim tech support tells me that it's not possible to add an after market lens. When I google "S9100 macro lens" I get results
that disagree with Fujifilm... Anyone have experience will adding a maco lens to the S9100
and selecting a macro lens? Help appreciated.

Re: fuji S9100 Macro Lens

I'm not familier with this camera, but I don't think it has interchangable lenses. The best you can do is to get some close-up adaptors that screw into the filter mount, but they won't be able to match the performance of a dedicated lens.

As you say you do macro exclusively, I don't think you have made a good choice of camera. A dSLR will allow you to use specialist lenses that are made for the job, and the Fuji, good camera that it is, simply can't do true macro.

As you have just bought the camera, I'd return it to the seller and get another more suitable kit.

Graham... Thanks for the reply...I hear what you are saying... But I'm getting fantastic results with the Fujifilm A303 and I want to upgrade... The problem is that I am a novice
and feel that learning how to use a DSLR will be overwhelming for me.... Yes, as I learn
more and gain confidence I will then upgrade... Ease of use is my main concern now...

Re: fuji S9100 Macro Lens

I think we are on different wavelengths!

Again, the 303 is a good camera, but it also cannot do macro. I think you mean you do close-up photography. Macro is reproducing something life-size, not just close-up.

If this is the case, you might well find the 9100 will do a job if it can focus close enough. You can, as I said before add some magnifying lenses to the filter mount, and these are inexpensive.

A dSLR is no different to any other camera, it is just more versatile. The main difference between your 9100 and a dSLR is the lens can be changed on the dSLR. The other controls are much the same.

If you can drive a Mini, you can drive a Bentley. They just have different wrappings.

Very nice shot there Paul - but definitely close-up, not macro.

Thanks for posting the macro photographs I see the difference... For now, I will continue
with the close-up photography.... Recently, 12 of my close-up photographs are on display in a fine arts gallery... The director has suggested that I continue to work with flowers.... I took the photo that I shared with you with the Fijifilm 303 3.2 megapixels... I hope that the Fujifilm S9100 will serve as a bridge camera until I gain more experience... I hope the S9100 will produce better results and allow me to experiment with the settings... I'm not kidding when I tell you how little I know... I don't know F stop from doorstop....

Perhaps Gary's offer here is the way to go forward. These lenses look good - but don't know if postage costs to you would be prohibitive.

Check out the link in post #6 Gary - he is in the USA. I suppose you could drop them off on one of your trips......

Having said that, I don't have a clue how much postage or courier costs would be. Depending on how dear the lenses are new, it might sitll be viable.

Your pics with the lenses are really good. They have to be the way to go for him.

Paul - I don't think it is a problem shipping the lenses to you, it's just the cost might be expensive. I don't send stuff to the USA very often, so have not a clue how much it costs.

We could be pleasently surprised. I don't know how big/heavy they are but Gary should be able to find out easily enough from his local post office.

They look really good from the pics and info he posted.

Re: fuji S9100 Macro Lens

Hello there,
My first post.

I realise that this is an ancient thread but I Googled ' Fuji macro lens ' and here I am.
I'm looking to supply my botanist daughter with the means to work with macro photography and I was struck by dabhand's images as that's the sort of thing that she's required to do. Can anybody advise me how to achieve that sort of quality on a limited budget , say three hundred quid ? Maybe a secondhand body and dedicated macro lens ? I don't really know where to start.

The forum looks really good.

Re: fuji S9100 Macro Lens

Welcome to Pixalo Quyote

Those images are not mine - I just used them to illustrate the difference between close up and macro.

Macro is an extremely difficult type of photography to master, and Marcin has written excellent tutorials on the subject.

http://www.pixalo.com/community/tuto...ial-24240.html

http://www.pixalo.com/community/tuto...-ii-31623.html

Although he now uses a dSLR, he started with a bridge camera with a Raynox lens and produced stunning results. The first picture in this thread (and there are plenty if other super macros in it) was taken with a Fuji S9500 with a Raynox lens - a very inexpensive combination.

There are also several other members who produce great macro pictures, and you can find them in the Macro Gallery.

Right, that's pretty good. I'm not sure about the depth of field though. Could that be improved upon using the same kit ? I've got a lead on a cheapish Fuji Finepix S9600 and the link to a Raynox accessory dealer from earlier in this thread.

I'm no expert on macro, but depth of field is very limited with this sort of photography. Best advice will come from the people who regularly do macro work.

Re: fuji S9100 Macro Lens

OK, thanks. Could you straighten me out a little before I blunder in there ? A dealer has made two suggestions;

Quote:
The DCR-250 has a magnification of 8-Diopter. The shooting distance to the object is about 109mm and the picture size would be 6mm with in Tape recoding mode.

The MSN-505 Super Macro lens has a magnification of 32-Diopter. The camera captures an intricate tiny object like 2mm with for a frame-filling enlarged close-up image from the distance of 18.5mm to the object at the maximum telephoto position.
Which of these would suit the botanical purpose best, do you suppose ?

Also, am I doing the right thing in obtaining a Fuji S9600 , new, for around 200 quid ? Is there a better , newer, Fuji camera for the job ?

Re: fuji S9100 Macro Lens

Again, our macro specialists will have to answer the technical issues. I can say that the Fuji S9600 is an old camera and I think that 200 is expensive for that model now.

Fuji and most of the other major makers produce this sort of camera. Check out (for instance) the Panasonic DMC-FZ38 and the Canon SX 20 IS. However, I think they might be outside of your budget.

Older models will be the Panasonic FZ 18 and 28, and the Canon SX 10 IS, although both of these makers also have other similar models.

The Fuji got very good press at the time it was in production, but later models might not compare to the others so well.

OK, I bought the Fuji S9600 ( 155 ) and the Raynox 250 (40-ish) and I'm testing it for her;

That whole flower-head was about 7mm across, so that's not bad, I reckon. I had to illuminate it with a hand torch, as it was far too close for the inbuilt flash, but I've ordered a slave flash .

I haven't had a lot of time free for photography, but I managed to get out into the garden for a couple of hours;

These are taken with a +1/+2 and +4 close-up lens in tandem on the Fuji 9600.

Anybody got any springtime macro shots ?

Like your white flower shot with your new close up setup. Getting in close on and tight on the first, looks like a slave flash will help you out when it arrives.

There's some more macro shots in the macro forum.
