Gig - which lens?

Hey all.
I have my first photo pass next week for UB40. This will be my first time and for my fave band so want to impress.
They want to possibly use some pics for DVD and want group shots on stage along with blue note style pics.

Due to budget and current lenses (450d with 18-55, sigma 70-300 and tamron 90) I'm looking to hire possible 2nd body and best lens for the job.

I have been suggested to get 10-20mm sigma f4 but on seeing some posts is this the best?

Suggestions please. What lens/lenses are a must? X

Re: Gig - which lens?

It is going to depend on how close you are going to be to the stage. I don't think that the Sigma 10-20 f4 will be any good unless you anticipate being arm in arm with the band.

A fast lens is going to be useful for low light, but there is often decent lighting at gigs too.

If you are close to the stage a 50mm f1.8 or 85mm f1.8 might do the job, if you are further away a 70-200 f2.8 will offer more flexibility albiet it is a bigger and heavier lens.

Gig - which lens?

Excellent. Thank you. I will be in the photo pit in front of the stage. Likely no access to be on stage. After first three tracks I will be back in the crowd.

Make sure you read VikingPhotography's posts then - in the second thread particularly he has some very detailed advice in at least two posts.

Re: Gig - which lens?

If you have them, take a 28-70mm f2.8 and a 70-200mm f2.8. I also use an 85mm f1.8. As Dabhand says, it depends how far from the stage the pit is. I shot Howard Jones last weekend at the O2 Arena and only needed the 28-70 lens. I did use the 85mm for a while but didn't need the 70-200mm at all. I was lucky as I did the shoot for his touring company so had full access to pit and stage.
