Decided not to mess about with IR filters anymore, so I think I'm gonna go the whole hog for a dedicated IR Nikon SLR. To add even more excitement, I'm going to try & take the D70 apart, change the Sensor filter & re-assemble myself
![]() ![]() Now for the mo I reckon the costs are going to be around :- - £180/$350 -> £200/$400 for a second hand D70 - $95 for IR filter plus $35 Postage ...although checking out for UK supply if poss. So, off to find a D70 ...unless someone wants to donate theirs to a good cause ![]() |

Re: Gonna convert a Nikon D70 to dedicated Infrared (IR) Camera
Good luck Dave,
almost did the same to an olympus point an shoot. but thought about it to much, I still don't know if the sensor in that camera is bonded to the hot-mirror. I am going with a 400D, I am starting to feel the tie down to lenses. I have made up my mind though, dedicated IR is the only way to go for me and look forward to exchanging ideas. ![]() Last edited by Boofers : 20-08-2007 at 16:58. Reason: spelling |

Re: Gonna convert a Nikon D70 to dedicated Infrared (IR) Camera
Nice one Boofers .....much nicer to not be alone when I break the thing
![]() Have a look at the link Hacker posted from lifepixel re tutorials. I was tempted by D50, but the steps involved to convert were more complex than D70, so I'm going the simpler route How does the 400D compare to the 350D in terms of complexity of converting to IR ? The need to recalibrate focusing is a pain in the a**, but you have to do what you have to do .....or just stick to manual ![]() |

Re: Gonna convert a Nikon D70 to dedicated Infrared (IR) Camera
The camera is sitting at home now still under warrenty, "just recieved it" got a pretty good deal at $579 (US) for the body only. I am just now contacting lifepixel to send it in and will have them work it out and adjust focus to their lens. I thought about picking one of my fav's to send them to use, but theirs will do. Like I said in another post, I saved for this route and for me it is cheaper then my 20D cost. My 20D is my primary camera for awhile to come. I gave up thinking about doing it my self because of the focus and wanted as much of the normal operation of the camera as I could get. As soon as I mail it off, I loose the warrenty, but I believe they will do a good job of replacement.
![]() ![]() ![]() Did find older Rebels for as little as $246 Still new. ![]() |

Re: Gonna convert a Nikon D70 to dedicated Infrared (IR) Camera
Dave, you're a braver man than me! I read through the steps and decided I'd rather do something simpler so I am going to try walking on water tomorrow!
![]() Can't wait to see your results when you get it done. So get a move on <g> |
