Re: good all rounder for canon fit
what camera you got??
i was looking at the sigma and tamron 28-300mm they are both around 200-250 quid depending on where you. not bought one though most reviews are good they both seem pretty good in my opinion i think the tamron looked better but not sure im thinking of the 70-300/70-200 if pennys stretch i think. |

Re: good all rounder for canon fit
28mm isn't very wide-angle on a 400D - equivalent to about 45mm full-frame. If you can run to it, the Tamron 18-200 (or 18-250) is a good general-purpose lens.

Re: good all rounder for canon fit
i think the 18-250 is a bit out of range at the minute might just wait and save for it instead

Re: good all rounder for canon fit
The sensor on a normal DSLR is 1.6x smaller in each dimension than a 35mm film frame. That's generally called the 'crop factor' - so if you use a full-frame lens on a 400D/40D/etc you're actually losing the outside parts of the image circle that is created by the lens.
The effect is to reduce the field of view by a factor of 1.6. Hence a 28mm lens on a 400D has the same field of view as a (28 x 1.6 =) 44.8mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Re: good all rounder for canon fit
I'm sure that with the current discount you can get the Sigma 18-200 OS in Jessop's for £239.

The Jessop's price for the Sigma was cheaper than one-stop last time I looked.

Re: good all rounder for canon fit
To get the discount, you might have to go onto their web-site and put in the code 'Summer 20' or whatever it is (I think there is a post on here somewhere giving the lastest discount codes). This will result in the low price.
From there, I think you can opt to pick up in store, but you will need to print off the page to take with you. Of course, it might be that the store will offer this price without the printed order. This lens came second to the Nikkor 18-200vr in a recent test of these type of lenses.

Re: good all rounder for canon fit
Don't forget to try to get a discount by asking as well. I always do
If you find it cheaper on the web, also ask about price matching as I know some branches will still do that. Failing a discount, see if you can get them to throw in a filter to protect the front. If you don't ask you don't get.
