Good lens for Canon 400d Landscape?

Hi i'm new here! I found this forum by searching in google about tips on good lenses. I have a canon 400d, have had it for 3 years now and I have the standard 18-55mm lens that came with it. I'm going to NY in a few weeks and I really want a good lens to go with my camera to take some nice landscape photos there, was wondering if anyone could help me with this? I'm looking to buy second hand, and my budget is not more than £100. I'm not sure if this will be enough? Thanks, Hannah!

Re: Good lens for Canon 400d Landscape?

I started with the kit lens (Sigma 18-50mm) and got some very acceptable landscapes but when I wanted a wider angle, cost and ability meant that I went for an M42 (with adapter - meaning all manual) 16mm fisheye - £50.00 for a brand new Zenitar (but I think they're more expensive these days - reflecting just how good they are)

Since then I've the Sigma 10-20mm for up close and wide landscapes (like waterfalls) but continue to use the equivalent of 18-55mm lens in my 15-85mm but will also use my 70-200mm (exploiting a patch of light, for instance)

Not necessarily useful info but my point is that you may find you get the best results sticking with the lens you've got (with which you're also familiar)

Oh, and

Difficult to recommend a better lens than you've got for under £100.

For a landscape lens I moved from the kit to the Canon 17-40mm L lens and am very pleased with the improvement in image quality. But then it cost around £500.

If you find yourself using the long end of the kit lens more than the wide end, I can recommend the Canon 50mm F1.8 II. It's very cheap and I've had some good results on the 5D.
The new Sigma 18-50 F2.8-4.5 DC OS is also very good, but slightly more expensve. I use one of these on my Sigma SD14 which has a 1.7 crop factor and I've had some good results. The image stabilizer works very well. I got mine off ebay for £110.
Good luck with your hunt.
