Re: good tripod at cheap price

If weight is not an issue you can get decent enough tripods for around £80 - some will even have a head at that price. Carbon fibre is much lighter and a bit dearer - Velbon will have some at around £115.

If you buy wisely now, you will have a tripod for life, so try to stretch the budget as much as possible.

Not everyone's cup of tea with it's bizarre leg/column single control (plus fairly heavy - and long when closed as it's only two section) but I wouldn't swap my Benbo Trekker - use one end of column for big lens support with a ballhead and the other for landscape/macro with the joystick head! You can get them for about £100

You can get some OK ones of eBay - I've about four other "normal" ones which cost me a few quid each and I still use them all in one way or another

Re: good tripod at cheap price

I ended up spending much too much on tripods because I wouldn't wait until I could afford a decent one. I could have had another lens with the money I'd have saved if I'd either waited or pushed the boat out....

Manfrotto 190XPROB & 804RC2 head £125. It does everything exept fried breakfast....

Re: good tripod at cheap price

I paid £115 for a Velbon carbon fibre tripod from Bristol Cameras. Comes with a reasonable head, although I ditched it in favour of a ball head.

It weighs less than half of the weight of my 30 year-old Slik 88, and it makes a big difference if you are going to be carrying it for any length of time.

The Manfrotto B190 is very good too. If you can get to somewhere where you can look at them and see if they will do everything you want - particularly with regard to low down use.
